All I'm saying that if you're practically married for a very long time, you might as well get legally married as it simplifies a lot of boring stuff later. My perspective of couples who've dated for a long time but one doesn't want to get married when the other doesn't is shaped by the fact that I'm part of the younger generation where there are more men and women (but mostly men) who aren't willing to be in a committed relationship because they want to keep their options open or something like that and that most of my experiences about this focus on younger people. With the age of social media people's dating pools are much wider and it's easier to have a secret relationship on the side.
I don't think older than millennial couples or couples that are dating after divorce have the same issue here because attitudes towards relationships were different in their formative years and they could just be done with marriage after they experienced it

Happens to me all of the time as a woman with short hair. A few months ago I got braided extensions and lo, suddenly no one is confused about what my pronouns are. At this point I just fuck with them and act like a very confused normie or say "well what do you think they are?"

Adding my own two cents and agreeing with you wholeheartedly. I don't doubt that there can be a madly-in-love and infinitely loyal couple without a ring to show for it but God is that piece of paper important. I've had many different flavors of jobs throughout my life, and I've seen people get screwed over by marriage, or lack of it, many times. Man becomes comatose after accident, "estranged" family gets the rights to make the decision on his care because the long-term girlfriend has no legal rights. Another case, man passes and everything goes to separated-but-not-divorced wife over girlfriend of many years. Of course, I don't know the nitty-gritty of these cases and having kids is also a big factor but the gist of it is, if it is just a piece of paper, why not get it?

Get a prenup and go down to the courthouse kiwis, especially if you feel you can trust your partner best in end-of-life situations like these. And if you're married to someone who would jump at the chance to pull your plug, d i v o r c e.
