Justin Sevakis seems to have put out his take on the whole RightStuf thing.
Firstly, the purchase itself, as Justin describes it has to do with the American market correcting online video following NFLX's decline (for context, Netflix was one of the 5 major stocks dominating the market.
Y'know of a little term called FAANG?). Crunchyroll bought stake in RightStuf International to have a place to sell merch in event that online SVoD collapses.
Personal note: The format war between Sony's Blu-Ray and Toshiba's HD-DVD was barely shorter than the SVoD shuffle. Heck, the war between Sony's Betamax and JVC's Video Home System (VHS) lasted longer than those.
Then, there's the spin-off of the porn division. His answer was that everyone in the financial realm, from investors to credit card companies are skittish towards porn, and to have Critical Mass be close to RightStuf would cause Sony Pictures to find out about Critical Mass (along with the 18+ section) and pull Crunchyroll's investment out.
