I feel like you're on the right path, but I don't actually think its Oligarchs vs Normies as a wide swath - A huge number of the oligarchs just want their businesses to keep running and their yachts to keep floating. They don't really care about politics past profit generation and a few favors to get out of criminal activity fueled by in the moment stupidity, like DUI's.

What I see instead is a handful of powerful and rich people have taken on a manifestation of the white mans burden, which I'm just gonna dub the Rich Mans Burden at this point. They see it as their duty and obligation to collect power and wealth and use it to shape the world into a better place for the mere plebs who live under them. You will own nothing and you will be happy, because I will accumulate the power and use it to make sure you're all living under my idealized vision for reality. Those who disagree are generally ignored because they're just the poor plebs, they don't know any better. They need to be convinced, cajoled, and compliance systems brought in via that wealth and power for those who don't. At the end of the day, they want to be the great heroes who saved the earth and its people through a driven revolution to throw off the shackles of the masses. The fact they live like kings from it is just the reward they've earned for their loyal work. They're the good guys, after all, who'll bring around the great change.

I'd bet their guiding principles sound familiar, because any effort to control the quality of someone elses life will generally degrade towards communism. Freedom of life is antithetical to standardized lives.

The general dividing line I draw is that an Oligarch craves wealth and power to ensure a particular standard of living for themselves. The carriers of the Rich Mans Burden crave wealth and power to ensure a standard of living for all peoples, regardless of those peoples actual wants.

IMO, there should be no unopposed races, even in unwinnable areas. Now you shouldn't spend much MONEY on them, but just keep them on their toes a little bit and keep your party on the minds of locals.

What you say has merit. People like Bill Gates definitely seem to have a God complex.

However, even if the most wealthy or visible or these people are true believers, I still think greed is a more straightforward explanation. "Owning nothing" - not homes, not cars, not anything that defines modern society - effectively means that the masses are eternally renters and using "subscription services." Which means who ever they rent their everything from or whoever provides those subscirptions will get billions upon billions of dollars a year, every year, forever. The talk of needing to save the planet is just a fig leaf given to justify government action that pushes us into this cyberpunk dystopian nightmare.

This also doesn't consider the people currently pursuing the hardest against Trump and other populists aren't the utopians, but people trying to preserve the status quo in terms of trade, immigration, manufacturing, and countless other policies. Trump was the first president in ages under which the lower and middle classes started to actually gain in their wages. Produce conglomerates were complaining about his immigration policies, because they couldn't find workers that would work for pennies on the dollar.

This is where I think the Roman comparison in modern America is apt - of "Optimates" wanting to continue to secure their wealth through outsourcing, wage arbitage, and feeding at the public trough vs. reformist "Populares" that have rallied around figures like Trump.
