It's funny, really. His conscience is screaming at him to stop, it knows being watched by the farms is a scarlet letter, but the narcissism completely overrides the sense of self-preservation. He is so driven by that ego that even though he's metaphorically dangling a toaster above a bathtub with greasy hands, he can't help but bathe in the attention. Seeing that art project is probably the closest thing he's felt to real joy in his life.
It's psychoanalysis 101 to point out that when you repress something it comes back in some form as either unconscious behaviors or uncontrollable, intrusive thoughts; oftentimes both.
Keffals, to me, is an excellent example of what Jung would describe as Anima identification. It's a very complicated psychological process, and one that I don't fully comprehend myself, but its consequences and effects are quite striking and easily recognizable. In keffals case, I think it's quite obvious, knowing absolutely nothing about him, that he wasn't socialized properly with other children or played with whatsoever. I don't know any of the circumstances of his upbringing or his relationship to his parents, but I can tell you with almost absolute certainty that his present behavior is compensatory and that it centers around a repressed masculinity.
You can see this in Animus possessed women (women who "think" and act like men, or at least act alike their secondhand interpretations of what being male is from the subjective perspective ... a form of mimicry that's easily dismissed as just that). Their unconscious, the part of the mind that is incapable of lying, has a rather objective, dislocated perspective and is tasked within the psyche with fascinating consciousness with ideas and concepts and contexts that have the potential to bring about psychic balance to the whole mental system. How this plays out for such women is a tendency to go out into the world and bite off more than they can chew with genuinely aggressive, dominant men. People often misunderstand, rightly so, that these women are seeking to demonstrate their prowess within the masculine hierarchies as masculine women; because the women truly do believe it themselves. But, this isn't technically true. What they're actually drawn towards and motivated by are potential situations in which the fact of their femininity is made crystal clear to both them and everyone watching. It's an attempt to consolidate an equilibrium between their out of balance, delusional egos, and their more objective but inarticulate unconscious recognition of their true natures. Why do they do this? Typically, because they seek power. It's raw, untrammeled will to power that motivates such women. They see the power men have, and they want it. It's that simple. Why? Because they're dishonest or delusional about the facts of their being. I could go deeper, but there isn't a point.
Keffals is essentially doing the same thing, but as a man. He's outwardly, in appearance, and in demeanor, in general demur towards his very nature, attempting to imitate and integrate what he views as the behaviors and mental logic which will afford him the natural power which is the sole prerogative of every authentic woman; that being the power to direct the patriarchy and determine male behavior with strict authority. This power, however, can only come from a womans natural capacity for the birthing and rearing of children - the most important of all natural human functions, to which the patriarchy must serve if it wishes to survive. He appears to have attained an approximation to this power by employing the same techniques that ascetic dark ages monastic institutions utilized, that being castration as a form of declaration of unquestionable moral piety and self-control (as all impulses outside of the will are felt to be shameful) and or extreme (emotional) destitution in service to a greater being or principle. I don't really need to point out the messiah complex he's got going, but I will. Indeed, it's quite amusing to note that throughout history there have been several major religious movements in which self-castration and the immitation of female behavior, as to make oneself fully a "woman" in mind and body, was seen as ideal. What Keffals is doing (making himself as female as possible in mind and body to game the system and wrestle under his control the male predilection towards subservience to femininity) is nothing new.
His unconscious, however, is in clear and traumatized rebellion against the extremity to which his ego has gone in its pursuit of this power. I mean, he's utterly sacrificed the possibility of participating in the world as a male. There's no coming back from castration, which is precisely why it was viewed with such awe by the pious and such reverence by the shameful in the early dark ages, where the sexual impulse was seen as sub-optimal to the ascetic spiritual existence outside the confines of our impulsive, salacious instincts.
All he has left, really, after his complete psychological disjunction with the masculine, and the fact of his maleness, is the power he wields within his community. And his unconscious knows this, although I really don't think his ego does. This is why, I think his behavior is so outwardly contradictory; on the one hand, he's being pursued by imaginary Kiwi farms hitmen and KKK anti-troon squads, and is in fear of his life from persecution for social heresy, and yet on the other hand he's also doing his utmost, seemingly without realizing it, to draw his supposed enemies ever closer, ever nearer; to stoke every envious and hateful flame; to encourage his community to wage war against every opponent; to tempt every nemesis and oppositional force into deeper and more detailed excavations of his heinous behavior; to provide every clue necessary for the final confrontation with the witch hunters who seek his death.
I think his unconscious just ... wants this all to end and for him to die a martyr. That's where this is going.
Suicide.
