According to the articles I'm reading, the perpetrator did used a VPN to hide their real IP Address and just to let you know, most VPN services do keep logs and will hand them over to authorities if they suspect that you committed a crime. Most of those VPN services that are shilled by Youtubers a lot do keep logs of your online activities and even if they don't keep logs of what you do online then they will be forced by subpoena to monitor what you're doing. You also have to be retarded to use those free VPNs which also glow as well.

I'm also sure they'll go over the metadata of those 911 calls to eventually track down who fucking did it.

So if Keffals or any of his goons were involved in the recent shitshow, watch your ass because the glowies have plenty of tricks up their sleeves to find your ass anyway.
