Even then it's not a guarantee. Claire Hartley's microcephaly was missed at this ultrasound because it was still within normal range of development. Lola's head was also within normal range at around the same time, but on the small side. They probably would've missed it too if Gwen wasn't high risk due to Claire and had to come back in a week, at which point they could confirm she had microcephaly as well. Many forms of microcephaly aren’t detected till the critical anatomy scan at 18 weeks.
I don't think most pregnant women know what the real point of this scan is. I think the majority only think it's to determine the sex of the baby, which apparently isn't always possible based on the fetus' position (at least, this was true years ago). And then they receive a devastating diagnosis instead.
Same thing happens with progeria kids. Slap their photo on the internet and say something stupid like "Like if you think he/she's beautiful!" and bask in the free asspats. Doesn't even have to be your kid if you really want "everyone" to know how kind you are. Absolutely disgusting behavior (and doubly so when the kids in question are perfectly aware that they're far from beautiful). But what bothered me worse were the people who would stroke her ego when she'd complain about the meanies online. "Sophia is beautiful" I saw one woman I know (a cow in her own right) tweet. Like, it's one thing not to be mean, it's another to actively lie. It's just bizarre behavior.
