I've tried to look on various places (Nottingham uni, PubMed, biorxiv) for any sign of a thesis or publication and cannot find any from Duncan.
So he's either totally lying about something (his presented name online, or having a degree or publication to begin with), or it's a taught MSci which doesn't include publications and is generally more exam work iirc (I wouldn't know particularly well, didn't do one). There's this EV, nature, and some moves are locked behind breeding. In competitive Pokemon, one point short in a particular EV will impact the outcome. It takes upwards of 50 hours to make a viable team legitimately. This means using tactics such as random number generator manipulation to force a good outcome.
What's worse, some moves, the TM ones can only be obtained once per save file in some versions. Want 2? Okay, play the game again.
Want X with Y move? This move might be exclusive to a particular game, might even require another game being completed. Play it again.
Screwed up? Tough luck if it's one of those legendaries, play the game again nerd.
This is with RNG manipulation, how about without? It's an impossible task. Look up the formula to determine EVs, it's nearly as complicated as the Wave Equation.
RNG manipulation requires skill as well, most inputs are frame perfect. A frame is usually 1/30 or whatever of a second, depends on the fps of the game. It might take 2 hours to RNG manip a perfect EV shiny Troonquaza with the skill self destruct that has a 59% chance of failure.

So this is a rather scary thing, because thinking back I remember there was a girl I knew as a kid who was a tomboy and she'd basically say she was a boy and act out on it when we were in elementary school, but by the time we were in high school she was still into masculine hobbies but was happy being female and dated a few guys before becoming a lesbian. As far as I know she's still just a lesbian into cars.

Tbh you can achieve perfect teams in-game nowadays without having to gen and it doesn't take too long. With that said, idgaf if you gen or not, it doesn't put you at a disadvantage either way, Duncan genned and still sucked, Verlis doesn't and also sucks.
So let me elaborate a bit on this.
For competitive Pokemon you need to worry about: IV (Think of it as the genes of the pokemon), EV (how you train it) nature, ability and moveset.
IVs historically have been random. There have bene ways to manipulate the passing of them from parents to children by breeding but it was not great. Nowadays you can fully manipulate a Pokemon's IVs so you can make the Charizard you won the league 15 years ago a perfect Charizard.
EVs: are additional stat points you can get depending on how you train the pokemon (fighting specific creatures gives you a specific amount of EVs on a specific stat,.like in HP or Defense for example). There has always been ways to help this process with medicines and hold items that double or quadruple how many EVs you get.
Nature: nature is absolutely irrelevant now since you can just use nature mints to get whatever fucking nature you wish on it so fuck off.
Ability and moveset might be the more boring ones since some abilities are autiscially hard to breed down, and some moves require you to do a long breeding sequence to get it from pokemon A to pokemon F. It is still probably the best argument for Henning but it is still far from the daunting task it used to be.
