Those barges need a tug boat. If they need a boat to pull it, why not just use the boats for insertion?

That's an easy one, a barge can easily hold a few fighting vehicles or a large amount of men, and can load and unload them faster than most boats. Also, if there's regular barge traffic in the area it would not look too out of place at first. Does make for a juicy target though.

So we went from commando raid to combined arms. I'd just have the men paddle across in a Zodiac, cuts down on the noise. Maybe that's too Hollywood.
Moving on to something even stupider than the Boris Johnson MI6 water raid: supposedly a Chinese reporter pissed his pants and fainted after seeing an artillery blast.

- blue: 'special' battalions (AIDAR, AZOV, KRAKEN, TORNADO, ...)
- green: territorial units

About 60 commandos landed on the east side of the power plant on 7 small boats (probably RHIBS)
Two self-propelled barges (likely full of troops/equipment) were heading towards the port on the west of the power plant

The commandos were discovered early, and during the response, aircraft found the approaching barges and destroyed one.
(Looks like the other barge managed to turn back)

It sounded like a solid plan ... occupy the power plant with a company of soldiers + commandos, just after the Russians fell back to the township (to show they aren't garrisoning the plant)
With the inspectors/media there, they wouldn't risk any major firefight to re-take the plant.

Escalation is still on the table, in fact it's the most likely option given the rigidity and foolishness of DC foreign policy. Russia can't back down, failure in Ukraine is not permissible for the Kremlin. Logically, the US should be able to back down, because Obama was right and Ukraine is not strategically important to the West.

But if logic had anything to do with it, there wouldn't be a war now. And Eastern Euros in general seem dumb enough to want to keep fighting each other forever, so there'll be war for as long as Uncle Sam says so and has the ability to back it up (not as sure a thing as it used to be).

I like 80's nuclear apocalypse movies. They're comfy.

I'm sorry, but this sounds like Gecko45 wrote the script for that raid and you're retelling the events like they actually happened.

It's likely more out of an obligation than a hope that Ukraine will win, and to encourage the neighboring countries that are leaving Russia's sphere of influence. It's also a chance to make the invasion as costly for Russia in terms of money and lives as possible, which Washington correctly believes is worth the expense.
