There's this funny book called "Technological Slavery" by Dr. Theodore John Kaczynski.
In it he described the "oversocialized man", in which, through shame and propaganda, many of those in modern society are unable to act in truly moral ways, and instead default to whatever society's accepted views are.
Oversocialization is such a powerful phenomenon that many just opt not to critique or analyze said accepted views, and just adopt and parrot them to keep up social acceptability.
