Parents also see this and will steer their sons away from such a military. Easy to go to school, financial aid available. Can make as much or more many places working menial jobs - CA's minimum wage is $14 - $15/hour, depending on number of employees. Okay, $15/hour times 40 hours/week = $600/week or $2400/month before taxes. A US Army E-1's basic pay is $1833/month before taxes. Granted, the soldier will get promotions and pay raises, and if married will get either 'free' housing and a subsistence allowance, but look what the soldier has to put up with for the money. Live in the barracks? Maybe get pulled out of your room by some sergeant looking for bodies for some bullshit work detail. Maybe you'll need a 'battle buddy' if you leave the base. Can't find one that wants to do what you might want to do? Could be shit out of luck.
