It's also possible that mom was a narc. Children of narcs, the Golden Child especially, grow up to be narcs quite often.

Dad being a pushover relates well to my theory too. In a narc parent/child relationship there's always the narc parent and an often well meaning but absolutely clueless parent. At least in marriages that don't fail. The narc only abuses their children when the nice parent isn't around and usually ends up cowing the kids to the point where they would never say anything to the nice parent.

If the narc in question is a covert narc the children won't even realize they are living in an abusive suitation because it just seems normal to them.
