I was curious and listened to that part of the podcast. It's at 23:27.

It just sounded like the dad had an implanted defibrillator, which he would have gotten unrelated to, and before, the cancer. Yeah, staff should have deactivated that! ICD patients have a love-hate relationship with their units, and that shock is not a feeling to put up with when you're no longer focused on continuing your life.

The dad is likely to have had a combination ICD and pacemaker. You'd usually want to keep the pacer function but stop the ICD, in the context of palliative care, although with palliative care the patient and family should have been allowed to choose what treatments they wanted a la carte, long before this stage of dying. I didn't listen to the beginning of the podcast, so I don't know the dad's timeline.

Post-mortem deactivation for ICDs is the same as with pacemakers, the big-ass magnet that's stuck to most facilities' medication fridge. If nothing else, staff should have been ready to slap that on. Not having the magnet in the room lightly implies that they weren't aware it was an ICD. Illustrative photo from a random NHS hospital's policy:




Not an excuse, but an explanation: ICD and pacer look the same with skin on top, and it's easy for that detail to go missing in report, even physician to physician, especially as falls into the background when the focus is on the patient's current status. Terminal patients frequently have an awful lot of morbidities to keep track of, and the focus now isn't on treating them but on managing patient comfort and the family dynamic. It shouldn't be missed, with the implication a rogue ICD has for patient comfort, but we live in a fallen, paperwork-cursed world. A floor transfer, a shift change, team nursing as the ED floods.

If you have a loved one with an ICD transition to palliative or hospice, especially if they transfer floors/facilities, please be proactive about reminding the staff that it's an ICD, not just a pacer. Bring their card in if you can. (Yes, the serial number model information ought to "be in the system," but do you want to punish your loved one to prove a point about EHRs being shitty, to the floor staff who agree with you about EHRs being shitty?) It's usually easier to call in the cardiac tech to deactivate the ICD portion of an ICD/pacer when the patient is still in the hospital.

Nah. I believe you're confusing cause and effect.

The 'castration trend', to put it in such terms, derives from alienated people seeking support and belonging through trooning out, because there is often no other recourse available to them. There's also a few reasons why autistic people in particular are easily going to fall into it, or, choose into it, with varying degrees of understanding of the consequences of this choice, for reasons ranging from "it's this or nothing" to "I get privileges on the internet for doing it."

We don't have a court that needs to stop people from fucking around. The powerful do potentially have use for a class of people loyal to them who depend on them utterly, however. I could see people who need lifelong medical support being easy to control. On the other hand, you can do that without needing all the overhead of troonshine.

Not so much cause and effect, I was accepting that even if it looks like there is cause and effect does not mean that it is.

Coincidences happen all the time. Just because eunuchs are not around now, certainly does not mean people troon out to fill the eunuch gap.

I was floating the possibility, but I don’t think it is anything more than a unrelated phenomena.

It may be far more likely that people think that medical science is far more advanced than it actually is, and as you say, autistics thinking it’s a way of getting clout and having less ability to separate sci fi or media from reality.

If I had to make another guess, I think it is some overblown white male guilt, combined with pornography and fictions about lesbian women, with incel influence, but above all the now ingrained belief that everyone is special and bullies are the ones with things wrong with them.

Probably veering a bit too off topic, but it's probably because Fox News has so much of a boomer audience and the content is packaged for them, so the segments are presented in a manner which is often almost comedic to anyone under about 50. That and TC has so many takes that liberals and lefties don't agree with.
