Factorio Thread

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
The native alien species are only a nuisance after unlocking flamethrowers and lasers (I plan on a future no-laser no-logistic run). I finally unlocked artillery after revamping my whole factory to have 250ish furnaces each for smelting iron, steel, and copper for my medium term goal of a 100 SPM (not counting space) factory. It's very satisfying to bomb all the biters who are standing in the way of industrial progress.

Lore sperging: if the aliens really are the native species, what do they eat? Why do they bite and spit acid if there were no previous predators? One theory is that they previously had predators but those have been wiped out.

Other bugs? Rocks?

Maybe smaller bugs we can't see. They only chew through rocks when they're in the way of their attack.

Another interesting question is why the only other living creatures on the whole planet are fish.

1. Their spawners and worms burrow into the Nauvis and extract nutrients. The acid is for processing the dirt into something they can eat. Otherwise, they’re probably solar powered. The player character does not need to eat, either, but he can eat a fish.
2. Before the player character shows up, the only acid they use is in worms, who burrow down and do their thing. They only evolve mobile spitters after a number of evolution points have been achieved.
3. The biters have assimilated or destroyed all other fauna on Nauvis.

A common mod idea is to address pollution. There is no way to realistically minimize pollution since trees can't be grown and all drills and furnaces and assembling machines produce them anyway. The best ways are probably to not use boilers (I think nuclear or solar scales better anyway) and to use efficiency modules everywhere. But if more resources could be spent making the factory eco-friendly in late game, then less resources would be needed for military defense. For example pollution capture devices in the form of scrubbers or tree replanting methods.

The artillary radar view looks like a shmup, lol
...and the train spindle looks like a shmup boss 🤔
The biters are stupid and will run the exact same path that all their dead brethren did. Another mod suggestion is for dead biters to give off a "death smell" so other biters avoid it. This would make defense more interesting because currently you can just defend the common paths and leave the rest relatively undefended. Implented in https://mods.factorio.com/mods/Veden/Rampant

I finally beat the game. I might continue with my current factory until my space science production is equal to the rest of it. I think that's mostly gonna involve more copper and iron mines and more trains which is kind of a pain so idk.

The ore patches get bigger as you go further out so you'll need to setup fewer mines.
An effective train system is one of the most enjoyable parts of the game imo

Let this be a lesson to all who complained about Factorio's dev and tried to cancel him: that minor controversy piqued my interest and caused me to pirate the game and play through it (I know there's a demo version but I wanted to really get into the game). Now I have decided to purchase this game, which I rarely do nowadays, because I support the devs who support linux and provide a DRM-free option. And for the piracy argument that it draws people in who may end up purchasing the game: well this time it's actually true.

I tried to make a "super-dense" factory in vanilla (just making belts loop back in and themselves, lots of underground belts) which chewed up time and resources and by the time I got to yellow science I realized I was completely boned because I didn't have enough red circuits to supply the higher-tier science packs, much less being able to do the yellow science better. I then tried a Bobs/Angels run and got bored because it was extremely tedious. The early game is tedious enough. In the regular game:
1. Hand mine some coal/wood and iron
2. Use a stone furnace to make enough to make enough iron plates to make burner drills
3. Keep making more burner drills and stone furnaces until you can build up enough copper plates and iron plates to start making belts, electric drills, and a power plant
4. Build a research lab so you can progress on the game and actually automate these for the first time

In the modded game (Bob's/Angels):
1. Hand mine some coal/wood and some non-indicative ores that all sound the same
2. Feed an ore crusher the ore and some wood/coal to power it up
3. Use a stone furnace to make enough iron plates from the crushed ore to make burner drills
4. Keep making more burner drills and stone furnaces until you can build up enough copper plates and iron plates to start making belts, electric drills, and a power plant
5. Realize that you can't make a circuit board out of an iron plate and a copper wire (from the copper plate) anymore, you need wood instead
6. Build a research lab so you can progress on the game and partially automate these for the first time
7. Look up how to automate this process instead of hunting down trees
8. Find out there's no comprehensive guide to the mod, instead just a bunch of Reddit threads and Imgur pictures
9. See it's something about making algae farms to make cellulose fiber, which can be further processed into wood
10. Realize despite complexity of the mod nothing has any value to the "real world" so whatever interesting byproducts from the oil processing just go back to the "science packs" and it's the same end goal
11. Realize that the illusion is broken.
12. Shitpost on Kiwi Farms to warn others

Space Exploration mod is fucking ridiculous.
60 hours in and I'm only just about to start building a space platform, let alone considering other planets. I've barely scratched the new tech tree.

You're never really going to get over the people that killed your grandad.
By that logic I should hate people I live in the country with. By that logic I can dig up some lesser known massacre, which happened 100 years ago, and hate people from another country based on that. And I should ask for punishment, 100 years later, on people of today who had nothing to do with it.
Politicians love it, they eat that shit up, they WANT you to hate your neighbour.

p.s. Im not sure if this is necroposting or not. This message just came up in notifications and with all the roll-back recently im not even sure site displays the date correctly.

It was necro, but you actually had something to say, so I forgive you.

Anyone who complains about necroposting should probably just go to a normal chat like Discord if they want a discussion to stop as soon as people stop talking about it for an hour. Especially since this is a thread for a video game that is playable and still being updated, necroposting should be a normal thing. A forum is made for long discussion of topics and as long as you have something to say and aren't just coming to say "lol, thread dead" or some other dumb shit, then nobody with a functional brain will complain.

Anyway, Factorio is coming to switch... For some reason. They started working on the switch port before the steam deck was announced, but even with that in mind I'm not quite sure why they bothered to make this. I doubt there's a lot of people who would want to play the game on the switch. Its also odd that its ONLY the switch, not ps4/5 or xbox. They said its going to have crossplay too, which will be interesting to see. Theres really no reason to not port it to the switch, but I cant think of many reasons to do so either. Its not really for me I guess, I wont be buying it.
