‘Sweetie Wife’ oh man how I loll’d at that! It’s an uncommon phrase nowadays and very localised geographically but it describes anyone (usually male) who likes to gossip, spread news or stories and is generally a bit of a busybody and one to avoid if you don’t want to be talked at (and about) for the next three years. My Mum would describe certain individuals in our street as ‘old sweetie wifey’s’ and give them a polite nod while moving determinedly past. It’s quite fitting he used that term to describe Chantal.
Language is amazing. An innocent phrase made by a non-English speaker on the internet has this farmer suddenly remembering long-forgotten details of early childhood. Thanks Salad.
