This is absolutely trash advice. You never test on Prod, and if you do, you are fucking amateurs LARPing as a company. There are three stages of environments. Dev tests the functionality of the code, dev environments are unsuited for testing at scale but don't need to be. Staging environment is one of two things: a) clone of your production environment down to the hardware, or b) an actual node in your production cluster. Once validated it gets promoted to being a live server in your production environment. Rinse and repeat for each node in the cluster.

The costs of not adhering to this best practice are catastrophic eventually. All it takes is one bad deployment where noone knows the fix to cause untold damage to the company. Every second a site is down causes exponential damage to it's reputation. In the event of a serious app like a payment processing tool or an e-commerce store, every second down is also lost revenue.

Being a shitty developer is fucking hard, and being a good developer is much harder than even that.

To circle back, the regular costs of multiple environments far outweighs the benefit of not.

Yeah, this generalized stuff being sperged at conferences right and left. We don't test in prod, we have 3x environments, we use hotswap for every our env. And once again, it doesn't work for every scenario. I can name a dozens out of top of my head when adhering to those principles does more harm then good money-, time- & effort wise.

Also hard disagree. 100% of my experience with talented network people says the talent is too busy to seek certificates. A ton of them have very informal backgrounds, but years of experience solving WTF problems. Their achievements overshadow anything else on their resume and that shows in an interview.

Staging environment data can easily be set to a point in time copy of the production database. This solves the problem of not testing with real data. Sophisticated test environments use scripts to randomize PII columns in the db. All of these stated problems have been solved at a corporate level.

Lastly, most corporate networking is on the cloud these days. The idea of ridiculously expensive hardware is nonsense unless you're a moron; the computing resources scale and can be (relatively) quickly changed in a cloud environment.

Right, physical hardware on site, dozens of it. And it needed to be configured by somebody who knows how to do it because they done it before on live stuff. And no, it's not a couple mikrotiks you setup by using google. Expensive hardware used just for that. Try to build staging for that using maybe just 5 of them. Once again, nobody does that

If I recall correctly, he ended up limited by the dearth of available performance data, so he never tried to pursue it beyond an academic level. Shame really.

He's used to a world where you can just fart torrents of packets between abstract, ephemeral devices without worrying about the stuff in between. Bandwidth is functionally infinite and bottlenecks are just brute-forced by expanding horixontally, rather than optimising performance. Well, that's the point, you can't really build any reliable network solution for testing without using actual physical hardware, and yeah, networking shit is hard. You can use emulators like Eve-NG or Cisco Packet Simulator, but it won't help you much when you touch real stuff
