I once saw a post somewhere a while ago (I can't remember where) where it said a little girl was going blind and her mother was crying about it and the little girl said "It's ok mommy I'll be strong, like Toph" (character from the Avatar cartoon) and all the comments were like "THIS IS WHY REPRESENTATION MATTERS"
Ok well I'm doubting that really happened in the first place because I doubt most things but also, Toph was blind but as well as being blind she was also not a shitty character. If you're throwing in every oppressed demographic into your cartoon/super hero movie (because it's almost always those two things) just for the sake of having them it's guaranteed they're probably going to be shitty characters. If you're making a character who's gay, blind or whatever typically you make the fact their gay/blind/a tumblrista an add on at the end like "This person is kind, strong, a little unsure of themselves and they're also gay" like it's just a thing they happen to be and otherwise they're a regular guy
