The most shocking part of this whole debacle is the possibility that Chantal got paperwork in order weeks in advance. Flying to the Middle East to marry a man she's never met before isn't really out of character for her. Ordering copies of documents, or even checking requirements for marriage abroad, is just not the Gunt we know.

It's clear they did something, whether it's an official marriage or not, but I harbor suspicions. Or at least genuine amazement. This is way too responsible for her.

That said, I'm really happy this is happening.

Yes, somehow she was able to get herself organized enough for all of this when all we've been hearing from her the past couple of years were excuses upon excuses as to why she couldn't stick to her diet/keep her appointments/clean her house/maintain a relationship with her family, etc. Guess her "muh mentalz" just disappeared overnight, how miraculous!

Milk Tea made a good point I agree with. This is clearly some sort of a group operation. She was not alone in that park video, someone was at the very least driving her around. We thought Salah was just camera shy. But after today's video, we know he's not. There's someone else around who either travelled with her or came to pick her up at the airport, took her for the first walk and is likely helping her survive in Kuwait. Also, her behavior was different in the park, as well as the video itself (quality, tags, thumbnail etc.). If they indeed had some sort of a semi-decent wedding, they needed a witness or two anyway. And she seems to be very careful to not dox this person.

Well, even if he is Chantal might still be getting laid on the regular for awhile. Terry McMillian swore up and down her gay Jamaican husband was an expert pipe layer.

I do not think they are legally married, it’s just way too much paperwork and red tape. They must have done something that allows them to be together in public without a chaperon besides just wearing wedding bands, right? What’s involved with those temp hooker marriages in Islam?

I just wonder if Salad can come to Canada at all. If he is Syrian I do not see how he has a valid passport to travel. Syrians are really fucked in Kuwait and Syria won’t renew a man’s passport without proof of military service (unless I guess Salsa could pay bribes for an exception with Chinny’s help?)

Something just clicked for me.

So a lot of Syrians got refugee status in Canada over the last few years. Not all of them have actually made it to Canada. There's a thing in Canada where any individual or group of people can sponsor any refugee/refugee family to come to Canada if they've been "pre-screened" and already been given the proper status. It's not uncommon for church groups or community leagues to just "adopt" refugees and bring them over. This has been the case in Canada for decades and is by no means specific to Syrians, but that's the most recent group to get a lot of attention from the public. The "adopters" have to agree to support the refugees for two years a year and are responsible for getting them set up with a place to live, arranging language courses, seeing to it that their healthcare is set up, getting their kids registered in schools, etc. (though this is usually handed off to community organizations). It's a way to let the government focus on the really tough cases while individual Canadians can volunteer to get other people off the list.

If Salad the Syrian was pre-approved to come to Canada as a refugee, but he kept missing out on the draw, then getting a Canadian citizen to sponsor him would get him out of Kuwait and into Canada. He doesn't have to marry Chantal for this, but marrying her -- or "marrying" her -- would definitely make her more inclined to sponsor him.

Maybe it IS a citizenship thing. Kind of. Because Chantal would have to pay his rent regardless of whether or not they're married, living together, or even on speaking terms. He didn't need her to get refugee status and he won't need her to start the process of becoming a permanent resident -- he just needs her to get into the country and set him up.
