They seem to let accounts build up for a few weeks, then probably using some system similar to how they mark accounts for interests they decide if it's an account meant to be suspended. It helps that there are insane leftists that make it their mission to track down all accounts they've decided are evil. They'll look for various keywords and report en masse which helps tilt the system.

It's a skill in itself, being able to filter the signal from the noise. Takes a fundamentalist understanding of many things to know at a glance which ideas can carry water. I do believe him when he says he likes to consider things using first principles, taking nothing for granted. I used to be able to think that way, and it really is remarkable if he still can. It's like mapping out a probability space, with known knowns and known unknowns, but you do it all intuitively, and can query for the full traces of possibilities at will, then move up and down the tree of possibilities in search of an optimal totality in resolution of a problem, not just one aspect of it. This is why I'm convinced to this day that he is generally not full of shit, even if he, I think strategically but not entirely dishonestly, gives overly optimistic, even hubristic, projections.

Still obviously can't trust he wants what we want ultimately, but he is a genius and by virtue of his ethnicity generally shares relatively relatable proclivities to many of us that most other current elites almost completely lack.

Also worth noting is this way of thinking is antithetical to middlemen, because it's often most useful, and glorious, when used to cut them out. (Analog to middlemen are unnecessary components and complexity in mechanical or digital systems.)

I feel like when it comes to Musk's motivations it makes sense to just view everything he does as his wanting to make more money.

If you kick people off and keep them off, you can't make money off of them. So it makes sense to have a way of letting people come back on eventually or to tone down suspensions over stupid stuff.

If you censor certain views on the site, then you have certain demographics no longer seeing as many ads (since less incentive to check the site) and they'll also lose any interest in paying a subscription.

Even the stuff about bumping up replies from verifieds (who can pay for it) could be seen as similar to Twitch donations getting read off. It's helping monetize people's interest in interacting with the celebrities on Twitter. Musk has even commented on how Twitter Blue can do 42 minute videos and seemed interested in YouTube's method for monetization.

What makes Musk unique is that he seems interested more in making money than in pushing an ideology, which ends up acting similar to an ideology since it means him rationalizing some of these moves of his as being in the pursuit of free speech.
