Money Barb Sued by Discover Bank

Damn, Barb must owe them a metric fuckton of money if they're suing her. I know people who have been in debt over $10,000 to Discover and didn't get sued... Once they get a judgement against her, she is going to have to start confiscating a huge chunk of Chris's tugboat, otherwise she's going to be held in contempt of court. Not to mention that if the stupid bitch tries to just ignore the judgement, they're going to tack on interest somewhere between 5%-10% until she gets the debt paid off.

Her other option would be to sell the house, and use some of the proceeds to pay this off, and you know the stubborn bitch won't do that.

And here I thought that Chris was the only one who was bad with money... Now I see where he gets it from.

This is probably the most significant event to happen to the Chandlers since Bob died.

Edit: OK, so I messed up my timeline and forgot 14BL burned down after Bob died. But, I still I think this will have a longer impact than the house did. It's going to take her years to pay this off at least if it's over $10k like some people are suggesting.

I'd assume this and with some back round in lending, I'd assume a sizable amount as they really don't want to drag a stone to court on their time to try to get blood. With out knowing all the details, I can't comment more, but few factors why they would not just write the losses off and go to trial.

I've worked in finance. If they've got a judgement they can sell the debt for more.

They can write off the debt either way, but a written off debt is still owed until it's either forgiven or the statute times out. The amount for which they can sell the debt might be relatively trivial, but they'll get something.

Banks and credit card companies have employees whose sole job it is to go to court over these cases. A lot of people don't even show so you can get a lot of default judgements in a day. They're not retaining outside counsel for this stuff.

@Marvin, what was that about the Chandler's finances being managed well by Chris?
If it was managed well, he wouldn't have debt at all. What I say is that Chris' situation is stable. He does a decent job of paying bills. Also what @Lady Cobra said. This is all Barb.

As things are right now, Chris mostly does the right thing, (aside from trusting Barb, of course).

Now, what would fuck him is if he fell for a predatory loan operation. Then he'd be completely boned. Actually, I'm kind of amazed he hasn't fallen into that trap yet.
I bet she used chris name to take loans and he is now blacklisted
(Here in brazil you're blacklisted by the SPC(Credit protection service) and you cant do barely any financial shit until you repay your debts, dont know how it Works in the US).
I'm sure she's done things like that before.

the tugboat is going to be garnished....This is gonna be good!

Nah, they can't legally garnish the tugboat, and probably not the pension either. The banks are basically trying to get blood from a stone here. IANAL so idk if losing the house is in play here.

Are they going to put Barb in a man's prison or a woman's prison?

Not gonna happen; this isn't a criminal offense.

This will get paid in some fashion. If she does not pay, they will pursue wage garnishment or a lien on the home.
Not sure if she gets any kind of a pension check, but if all she has coming in is Social Security, they can't garnish that. The only things that Social Security payments can be garnished for are debt to the IRS and Student Loan debt. A lien on the house is much more likely. And considering that I don't think that the state of Virginia has a homestead exemption, if there is a lien on the house when she dies, Chris would have to pay that amount off before he was granted full possession. And we all know how good the fat autist is at saving money and budgeting for the future.

Huh, I always thought that Chris would lose the house as a result of getting conned into trading it for a handful of magic beans.

How likely is it that the Chandlers will end up in a situation where a bunch of Discover people walk into their home and take items of value in order to pay for the debt?
Not for credit card debt. Unless they are defaulting on a home loan, a loan with collateral or they owe the government, nothing will happen.

I enjoyed that American Dad episode last week when Roger and Steve go to the mall with their Discover card (called "Discovery" on the show for legal reasons) only to find not a single store accepts it until the Discover card spokesperson in the garbage dumpster shows them the hidden 1980s mall just below the escalator that only accepts Discover.

The episode ends with Roger (or, to be more precise, one of Roger's many personas) faking his own death to get out of debt. I wonder if Chris saw that American Dad episode and is now advising Barb to fake her own death?
As if Chris actually watches the one good McFarlane show.

I'm pretty sure the only item of value in that household is Chris's ps4. God knows it certainty isn't the mountains of junk that Barb collects.

Debt does not disappear. You can't run away from it.
It's not like Borb has anything else going on her life right now. There's always bankruptcy. It would be a blight on her credit report but again, it goes back to my first sentence
