I can believe he watched it, or maybe that Wendy made him watch it. It's not like kids are unable to watch movies from eras from before they were born. Parents sitting down with their kids to watch a childhood favourite movie is probably the most normal thing Wendy has done with Desmond.

I like to think she would have been thrown into an asylum for hysterical women and Desmond would have hopped trains to California as a hobo, at this time.
He would have either died from the many perils living the free life or settled down as a drag act once he reached and appropriate age.
