8,000 people in a country of 70 million is not "common".
You have to keep in mind a lot of our media are socialist woke goons who think that everyone else should pick up the slack of others mistakes (through heavy taxes usually). The vast majority of people get by just fine, there's a handful of braindead morons who mismanage their money but that'll happen no matter what country you go to, you can't save people from themselves.
There's many issues with this country, mostly immigrants and the retarded overbearing nanny state laws about hatespeech, but if you ever meet any of these people in extreme poverty you'll realise it's almost entirely self inflicted.

As for the socialism thing, sure, let the dumb perish. But considering just how much of a nanny state the UK is, and how much money they spend on useless socialist shit every year as it is, why not divert some funds from some other bullshit thing towards, uh, not having thousands of old people freeze to death in unheated houses every year? It just looks bad. Think about how much money they spend on propaganda to make the UK look good internationally, and then shit like that comes around and they can't/won't do anything about it.
