Twitter hit with mass resignations after Elon Musk's ‘hardcore’ ultimatum

Elon Musk is now facing a new crisis at Twitter as a wave of employees seemed to reject his ultimatum of an “extremely hardcore” Twitter 2.0 or leave the company. Hours after a deadline for workers to check “yes” on a Google form accepting “long hours at high intensity, it seems a large number of employees have rejected Musk’s vision.

Exactly how many employees opted for severance over remaining at Twitter isn’t yet clear. The New York Times reported the number was in the “hundreds,” while other early reports suggest the number could be much higher. The departures come after Musk already cut 50 percent of Twitter’s jobs in mass layoffs.

On Twitter, dozens of Twitter employees who had survived the initial round of layoffs tweeted farewell messages. One employee tweeted a video of a group of workers inside Twitter’s office counting down to the 5pm ET deadline on Musk’s ultimatum. “We’re all about to get fired,” he said.

Others tweeted messages alluding to Musk’s policies. In his Wednesday morning message, Musk had said that “only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.”

As the deadline approached, Musk reportedly grew concerned about how many remaining employees could leave the company. In a new memo, he appeared to walk back some of his earlier comments banning all remote work, though he still said he would fire managers if remote workers on their teams weren’t performing.

But it seems the concession wasn’t enough for many at Twitter Platformer’s Zoe Schiffer reported Thursday that Musk and his lieutenants were struggling to figure out just how many employees had declined to check the “yes” box on his Google form, and that Twitter would be closing down access to its offices for a few days as an extra precaution.

The departures raise new questions about whether the remaining Twitter engineers will be able to reliably keep the service up and running. Current and former employees are already speculating that the latest exodus could further put Twitter’s ability to function at risk, especially with the start of the World Cup a few days away.

Twitter no longer has communications staff, but Musk so far hasn't publicly commented on the resignations.

I like how they try to frame it as musk 'facing a crisis' when they did exactly what he wanted and expected them to do. Fucking manipulative journos

I guarantee it’s more complex than that even if it shouldn’t be. Young hotshot engineers with big ideas and something to prove? Twitter is probably needlessly complex with all kind of meme technologies, solutions, and make work projects.

I know that a lot of Amazon teams have this issue, I can’t imagine Twitter isn’t suffering it to some degree as well.
Its shocking how often this happens. Hell back when I was in college one of my classmates, who was a literal autistic and came up with all kinds of bizarre solutions that used to piss the instructors off, did a php project in a way that was so absurdly confusing and convoluted that the instructor took several days to mark it because he couldn't figure out how it was even possible that worked....and then proceeded to provide copies of it to future students as a challenge assignment to see how many people managed to figure it out. The instructor said it was one of the most bizarrely written piece of code he had ever seen in his entire life. I don't even want to think about what would happen if that student ended up working at a place like twitter and got his hands on the codebase. They'd probably find him strangled to death in the bathroom one morning by some pissed off group of engineers who couldn't take his shit anymore

and just to show how autistic and obsessive this guy was let me put it this way - he wrote his final java project in fucking binary and then compiled it into a working java app. I don't know how he pulled that off, the instructor took one look at it and looked like he was going to cry, considering the only available code was in binary he technically should have failed the project and thus the class, but was passed anyway for the sheer level of dedication it had to have taken to manage to pull that off. Frankly I think the real reason the instructor passed him was because he didn't want to have to go through that again if the guy had to retake the class

With so many people losing their jobs and business during covid, they aren't gaining any sympathy here. None of these people's jobs were in any danger due to the lockdowns, but they were the ones telling others to not going to work and shut down for weeks and even keep paying their employees the same as if nothing had changed.

This is exactly what many people working for the government did. They were still paid the same, and demanded others to act like their income hadn't been affected. I have never been anyone so detached from reality like these fuckers. Even millionaires know the value of work.

I have zero sympathy for them. They were asked to work harder, what is what many people who are trying to recover from covid measures is doing now, and they are throwing a tantrum. Touch grass. Then touch poisoned grass and eat it.

Demanding workers dedicate their time beyond 40 hours a week to work is absolutely not expected nor should it be normalized. It's the same argument I make about "crunch time" in the video game sector, it's unfair and wrong. People should work to live, not live to work. Expecting people, fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, to sleep at the fucking office and sweat bullets over the prospect of being fired for "underperformance," whatever the fuck that means at a social media company, for a fucking paycheck, is absurd.

Musk is a piece of shit. Just because he thinks it's okay to be a shitty absent father and husband doesn't mean it's everyone else's prerogative as well. I'm a red blooded American and want to string hippie San Fran faggots up from lampposts, too, but I would absolutely leave my job if my boss sent me this retarded fucking ultimatum.

I have seen conservatives like Laura Ingraham and other pundits on Fox News talk smack about remote work lol.

"Think of the subway revenue and other revenue that cities need lol".

Other Pozed companies are already cutting out the Poz as the "not a recession" Recession is going into full swing and it turns out "Diversity is our strength" loses companies crap tons of money.

Exactly, this video shows that other big tech companies have also been laying off people, it isn't just Elon Musk at Twatter:

Now will we see a mass of resignations at Facebook as well?

Facebook is firing around this time people too, see the above video. This is what people aren't realizing. It isn't just Elon Musk doing this, he's following a wider restructuring trend in this field.

You'd think so, but he did it out of stupidity rather than actually trying to do something interesting or fucking with anybody

Case in point: later that year we found out he ended up in the ICU with a case of sepsis that nearly killed him after shoving a candy cane up his cock, accidentally breaking the hooked end off and getting it stuck. From what I heard the peppermint gave him a burning sensation so painful it made him scream and cry for the better part of two days and freaked his mother out but he refused to tell her what was going on and she assumed it was something autism related and he was just spazzing out. Didn't find out what really happened until she made him go to the ER to get checked out and he told the doctor

So where's his thread?

This dude def identifies as a women now.

The problem is these people are going to find jobs at places everyone else works at. Twitter was a containment zone for these losers.
Not sure about that. We are just in month-1 of the downturn in tech. But already we have seen massive layoffs.
This will continue with layoffs and hiring freezes for at least a full year.

So, these folks will not find a job at other places.
It will be like 2001-2003 once again. Never any traffic jams in silicon valley, the 101 is an open road.

I have to admire their bravery/entitlement. They think that in this coming climate they can go to an interview and basically say "Then they wanted me to work hard, so I quit, because I don't want to have to work hard." lol

The problem with that is it requires them to know that. It's been shown that moderators and HR all through tech have hugely inflated senses of their own importance.

It also doesn't help that impression when the 'reporting' on all this is full of articles lamenting the firing of those sorts of employees, but all reports on technical people being fired/leaving is 99% 'sources say' and insinuations rather than anyone willing to go on record to say that it's happening. A woman who worked 'combating political misinformation' gets a fawning article about how her Christmas won't be as lavish this year because she was fired, but these supposed integral engineers aren't being directly talked to.

Sure, Musk could be getting rid of important employees as well. But I'd say it's guaranteed that, irrespective of whether he is or not, all the journalists who hate him for taking away their drug supply are happily trying to make things sound as bad as possible in any way they can. So they're going to keep on reporting he's fucking everything up and he's ruining Twitter, no matter what he's actually doing.

It's going to take a while for all this to shake out. But it's still a win if Musk is actually fucking up with who is leaving Twitter, because fuck Twitter.

I would hazard a guess that a smart technical person who worked at Twitter is likely smart enough to know that dissing your old firm publicly is not going to look good to a prospective new firm. If a prospective hire left his last job in a huff and smeared his old boss to journalists, what will they do when they wind up leaving your position?

There seems to be this enormous disjunct among the professional/managerial/HR class between actions and consequences. Leaking internal memos isn't going to go over well with your higher-ups no matter how noble you think your cause is. Causing drama in the workplace is going to have an impact on your performance reviews and future employment status no matter how offended you were that they didn't use your made-up pronouns. But yet the ex-Twits went boldly into a tight marketplace screaming like loons and guaranteeing their resumes a quick trip to the circular file.

Kiwis think it’s all HR and moderators leaving, but those people have the least leverage and the fewest options open to them. Instead Elon is going to lose lots of critical employees who aren’t near as simple to replace once that tribal engineering knowledge is gone.
having microblogging website and some hosting is not that hard... Null could do that on the 2 hours he currently uses to sleep---

Yes, but the other ones did slightly rally last week, whereas Twitter's remained pretty choppy

It isn't helped by the fact that its been in the news like, every fucking day since Musk got it despite the fact that it's fucking twitter, one of the least important things on the goddamn planet, but so it goes

He’s about to be left with none of the best people and Indians who produce 4 hours of work in 12.
You say that like it's a bad thing when it's a sweet gig if you can manage it.

I wfh and use a mouse mover. I work maybe 2 hours a day and I'm paid for 40.

Whether it's lazy tech or "The boss makes a dollar when I make a dime, so that's why I shit on company time" blue collar work the principles the same.

Elon Musk is now facing a new crisis at Twitter

Stopped reading right there, if the author is going to be disingenuous like that right off the bat. This resignation wave isn't a crisis, this is exactly what he wanted: the trash taking itself out, and if they resign in a a huff, very publicly, they lose the right to jump on the Everyone-Sue-Elon bandwagon that's no doubt circling the block right now looking to bring "wrongful termination" suits.
Yep. Elon Musk is doing exactly what he said he was going to. Twitter would probably run fine with a few hundred network engineers and a few hundred pajeet code monkeys on staff, along with some contractors coming in to work on projects here and there. The first project should be to write some AI code to automate 99% of moderation tasks.

As for selling ads, that can be outsourced to agencies with Twiiter keeping a handful of Business Development Managers on the payroll to look after them. Probably on a minimum wage retainer with hefty bonuses.

This is the actual text of what was sent out. Note the lack of actual numbers beyond platitudes about needing to work long hours and exceptional performance.

"Whatever decision you make, thank you for your efforts to make Twitter successful."
I love how he's basically saying "If you're not going to work, we don't need you. Thank your for choosing to leave on your own, don't let the door hit you on your way out."

Are you saying it wasn't autism related?
