I said exactly this earlier in the thread, that the edgelord defense would have actually been completely legitimate in this case. All she'd have had to say is exactly that, it was part of the whole point of her studies to be able to argue a position. Since the paper was fairly equivocal, it could easily be presented as part of a policy of favoring less harsh and punitive laws, preferring rehabilitation, bla bla bla.
