Hackers vs Bankers and its writing really does show just how poorly thought out some thought process can be for the SJW crowd, especially when it comes to literature making grandstanding points.
(Yes, sorry everyone, but I am going to sperg out about the terrible writing.)
Now, in all honesty it’s very easy to crap out a propaganda piece like this because you really only need to tick the boxes. And dear lord does Hackers vs Bankers tick those boxes.
Unusual hair? Check.
Self diagnosed mental illnesses? Check
Some form of transgender person? Check
One dimensional villains everyone still hates? Check
Pages and pages of plot interrupting moral grandstanding? Check
None of these characters are relatable. At all. This is really the key point to a good propaganda piece being effective. Orwell was an expert at this because people like Winston Smith were easily relatable to us because he behaved like us, thought like us. We typically have to understand and become invested in a protagonist, or even a secondary character (Sir Conan-Doyle’s Dr Watson) in order to become invested.
From what we’ve seen of Hackers vs Bankers it fails badly on that trope.
The second failure is character improvement. After investment people want to see the people they are invested in improve and be revealed to them. Both Tankboy and Crowgirl fail on this so spectacularly badly it’s frankly jaw-dropping. Doubly so as you get slapped in the face early on the story basically goes;
“She’s anorexic, no she’s not going to get better during this story. Fuck off.”
You’re basically dangled a golden story opportunity here and it’s ignored. Why’s she anoerxic? How? Is it related somehow to her hatred of Toronto Mistrust? Was she unable to eat at one point due to their impropriety somehow?
If we don’t need to know this, or use it for the story’s development then you’re just wasting time writing it.
Same thing for Tankboys PTSD. Why does he have it? Is it relevant to the story or used to help round him out as a character? No? Then we don’t need it.
His child abuse arc has fuck all to do with the relevant storyline so again, we simply don’t need it. Instead it’s more egregious box ticking to draw in the tumblr crowd it’s clearly designed for.
Flattop Jones is badly one dimensional because… urgh. Sorry. But this is from the crowd who supposedly “LOVES! PoCs” but always fails miserably to write them as anything other than an awkward as fuck shoe in just to show how diverse they are.
I’ve worked a lot with people from a lot of backgrounds 1) 95% of the shit you talk about is exactly the same as when you talk with ‘whitey’ because “lol #firstworldproblems” and 2) When you do show actual interest in things like culture and religion they are shocked you know anything because it’s typically not normal conversation.
Christ, the actual interesting character is Taylor Santos. But that opportunity is pissed away on the altar of box ticking. A tranny in a highly testosterone charged environment like an investment bank would be devoured in insults, swearing and everything else. But nope, we just get misgendering, the greatest single crime against any tranny on the planet.
