Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

Great to hear. Trailers looked promising so I'm happy to hear lives up to them.
In terms of raw emotional potency (like, actual emotion from the actual story, not "OH MAH GAWD, NEGRO IS GHEY, I CRI") I'd even go so far as to say that del Toro's version actually surpasses the 1940 Disney version. Seriously, either watch it when it comes out on Netfux, or plunder it from the high seas. IT REALLI GUD.

ETA to emphasize my point:

I keep seeing merchandise for it for sale in discount sections next to Snuggies and PS2 sports games :story:
I keep seeing buzz light-years, even ones that kinda try to look like the classic buzz and those space cat toys on the bottom shelves under all the new stuff people actually want. It's poetic irony given how it was implied in the original toy story (confirmed in ts2) that the buzz lightyear toy was in short supply despite a high demand and where hard to get a hold of.

I'm actually planning on seeing it at one of my local theaters on Monday, it looks like an amazing movie.

100 years and what does Disney have to show for it? A gay black leading man and a crippled dog as the comic relief. I know this belongs in a different thread but really animation wise the new logo is fitting for nu Disney itself. Beautiful on the surface but hollow and meaningless on the inside....again I don't mean to sound like such a sooner but honestly that's all I can feel in light of this strange world debacle.

Product ticks all the right diversity boxes, audience of 30 something overgrown children clap like seals and praise product, move on to next product that checks the right diversity boxes.

Well I need something to balance out the negativity so here take these drawn together clips.

Honestly, that’s one of my problems with capeshit and Disney princess movies. There’s too many superheroes or everybody has magic or superpowers.

Modern creators today have no imagination in anything. I mean, nothing’s original under the sun but you think after years of literature and animation, people would be creative.

You mean like Brianna wu?
View attachment 3934926

Aside from this tweet sounding like Wu running a progessive NPC speech subroutine, what is most amusing is that conservatives aren't going to have any reaction to this movie because they are not going to see it nor care that it even exists.

Wu is going to discover that indeed "the opposite of love is not hate but indifference". Conservative parents are already aware of Disney's woke agenda, Lightyear informed them of that so now they are not going to even bother.

If Disney wants to produce this stuff, by all means, people aren't obliged to watch it. Let Disney become more and more irrelevant by the day and continue wasting and losing money on projects that insults and ignores the demographic of traditonal families that made the Disney brand a household name.

Disney had a good run, if it now insist on committing suicide, we are in no obligation to save it. Let it go bankrupt and die if that is what it takes for other corporations to understand "Get woke, go broke" is not a joke.

I agree about the complaining about for kids vs for adults sperging. Good animation is good regardless of age rating and complaining about lack of "adult" cartoons can lead to shit like sausage party or every other edgy stoner humor cartoon. When what we really need is just more cartoons and more stories to tell

The problem is western animation is controlled by a small group of nepotistic out-of-touch L.A executives that would rather recycle the many IPs they have at their disposal than actually create an industry fueled by creativity.

The problem is that there's too big of a barrier to get into western animation.

IIRC for anime it's mostly backed by the manga industry so if you can pull enough numbers with your manga then boom 12 ep anime.

And I'm not sure it's as straightforward here in the west

You know....say what you want about black cauldron. Sure it bombed, was the lowest point in the Disney dark age, and possibly the lowest point in the animation dark age. But it bombed because the market for animated Disney films had plummeted in 85. Well that among other reasons but the point is. 30 years later and even if you don't like black cauldron you have to admit a lot of genuine effort and passion went onto it. The animation and design is gorgeous, the soundtrack is grand and epic, it was Disney trying to tell a great fantasy story.

Compare that to strange world. Who's gonna care about it in 30 years except as a token of old shame? It bombed because people didn't care about the lead role being s gay black boy with biracial parents and the comic relief sidekick was a disabled dog. It bombed because rather than put all their effort and focus into telling a good story the writers and animators focused on sending a "message" and pushing an agenda.

But the lead character sucked dicks and took it up the ass. So it must be a FANTASTIC movie and anyone who doesn't like it is literally a Nazi.

You seem incredibly mad about a movie you have no intention of seeing.
