Disclaimer: I’m not a long distance hiker, but I know women who do it.
There’s a simple plastic stp which is shaped to help wipe (not sure how to explain), plus the hiker will use TP or tissues because she doesn’t want to get a UTI. They do wash them in sinks (and dishwashers iirc) as frequently as possible. There’s also wet wipes for this kind of thing. Hikers will have a designated pocket in their bags just for the stp, or they’ll have a case for it. They do practice at home, at first in the shower and then with the toilet. It’s really not messy.
It’s not a sex thing or a gender thing. It’s utility. Urine is not the grossest thing in the world (if it’s your own), and it won’t be the nastiest thing you have to deal with on a long hike.
Mileage may vary because hikers are trying to carry as little as possible, but they’re not about to ruin their urethra and risk kidney disease.
I don’t trust Yarrow to use one properly or keep it clean.
