Like, it's just flat out not true that Normal is what game devs balance the game for. Or design. Doom is notoriously designed around harder difficulties. If not necessarily the holy trilogy, everything afterwards certainly was. Including DOOM II. But knowing id, they also designed the first game around Hard and then took away stuff.i noticed something last night while i was watching someone play God of War on normal difficulty. for all of phils screaming and pissing about "NORMAL DIFFICULTY IS HOW THE GAME WAS DESIGNED TO BE EXPERIENCED"
that's apparently not true. I've been playing God of War on the highest difficulty possible, and while I have complaints, I noticed during the Heimdall boss fight from the streamer I watched, Heimdall wasn't behaving how he did for me. I'm not sure if it's the same on Give Me No Mercy or just on Give Me God of War, but Heimdall definitely had different attack patterns when I fought him compared to when that streamer on normal difficulty fought him. I'm not sure how many bosses this is true for, but there are at least 2 attacks Heimdall was throwing at me pretty regularly that he didn't use at all on the normal difficulty that I saw.
so phil is missing out on content and experiences the game has to offer due to a skill issue. rip.
Like so, so many games you hear devs say "Our real balance is in Hard". But really I just wanted to stress that Phil is not only wrong. He's been wrong for 30 years.
Mega Man 2 was designed around Hard. "Normal" was just localizers making the game less bullshit. And Mega Man 2 isn't even hard. So, that's almost 40 years he's been wrong about this.
