Is Comics Gate Kings dying? A marathon well read User Unzipped stream Mike S Miller joins in to discuss the schism between the Nerdrotic crew and Ethan Van Sciver. During the discussion after the 2 1/2 hour mark, Mike suggest that comicsgate is stagnating because they have no advertising power on Friday night tights.
Me not know and I can only post for myself but if you all will indulge my candor, I have a few somewhat idiosyncratic rules that guide my viewing of internet personalities. Here are a few:Now this is something that might be a hell of a lot more interesting than the current IGG Shadow Banning Saga
(1) I don't want to ever see your elderly parents or small children on a stream. It feels violative in some way.
(2) I don't want to laugh with you. I want to laugh at you (unless I'm laughing with you at someone else)
These have all been infringed upon as of late with CG which - in combination with the whole scene being a boring, clueless, inconsistent shitshow - causes my attention to wander.
However, last week in the early A.M. @FROG and Malin had a good run on Malin's channel, carried over from Anna TSWG, and it all seemed to flow nicely. Nasser on stream, some other guest appearances in chat. Frog took a giant dump on the head of his own CG Kings show whilst maintaining he was not taking a dump on his own CG Kings show and that all seemed well and good. Then, the following Monday, he's taking the night off to go to a concert and the show is on Shane's channel, I guess? Did this lead to drama? I dunno. Not sure I care because teasing a big shake-up and then fucking-off is not a good look.
If this is all rats fleeing a sinking ship, then great. I'll watch them get sprung like Sir Mix-a-Lot at the mere mention of Alex Stein until it becomes boring or maybe not. Maybe I'll check out Graham Nolan making things happen for himself on Nerdrotic's channel until it becomes unwatchable, which is about 10 minutes in? I dunno.
I always got the impression that these were creators (and a few hangers-on) who did not quite get what they were doing facefagging on YouTube, which held great promise for awkwardness. Dunno if it's the wake of Rippa (praise be upon him) and the advent (from outside CG) of "The Iron Age" or something else but there feels like a distinct lack of energy/momentum here and a creeping sense of smug/spite/recrimination (or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part). Whatever else we could say to mock the Nerdrotic crew (and it's an embarrassment of riches in that regard), they have energy and focus(?) and commitment. They patronize and deftly ingratiate themselves to their chat/"fellowship" relentlessly. When they say they are going to do something, they generally do it. I keep going back to the concept of YouTuber merch vs. art and I still think there is something there. The insufferable grab-assy clowns at the end of the day understand what business they're in. They're YouTubers doing YouTube, harvesting superchats, pushing gay plushies and other bric-a-brac, organizing meet-ups where lonely hearts can make their pilgrimage and their personal decision for Christ. CG talks about it enough to burn a few bridges, then goes on vacation. Yeah.
For what it's worth, I think @FROG's initial rant about CG Kings was sincere in the sense that dude is smart enough to understand what is going on. If comics aren't relevant anymore and you feel nursing home walls closing-in then you make them relevant or you make the milieu you've created around your comics greater and more dynamic and energetic and entertaining than the sum of the parts. You create and maintain high-energy and momentum and you cultivate discipline to ensure what limited time/energy you have is well spent. Pretty soon the Law of Attraction or some gay shit takes hold and before you know it the Alex Steins of the world are getting sprung for you. I'm not sure being chronically inconsistent and alienating serves any of that.
Thank you for indulging me these inchoate ideas.
