Yes and Russia is doing a bang up job of defending by invading Ukraine and getting itself bloodied to hell by some third world shithole that had every former eastern bloc NATO country dropped its soviet era gear into as an excuse to modernize. Don’t worry China is an even bigger paper tiger and their only advantage is they haven’t yet lost ships to countries without a navy yet. No it doesn't. Those are two wildly different things.

The nuclear armed or just wealthy states in NATO see this as more along the lines of "competing nation" but for the Baltics and the like it's clearly an issue of Russia being a "security threat". Fundamentally it's a largely irrelevant distinction for NATO or Russia because all that matters is what actions these counties take and either way NATO is going to support Ukraine.

I've said it before but for the West this whole situation is a proxy war, I know it's been some time since we've had a proper one that wasn't between goat fuckers but it really is. We're arming Ukraine for the same reason we gave the Mujahideen Singers to fight the Soviets in the 80s or why the Soviets and Chicoms flew MIG's for the Norks back in the 50s.

That’s a question not even worth asking. If Ukraine does Russia is still going to push to try to retake those areas because Russian says it’s there, if Ukraine doesn’t it’ll still push to retake its territories back. Either way it’s just a status quo of what happened in Donetsk long before the special mission operation kicked off.

Right now I’m just looking forward to see how both sides handle the winter when the ground freezes solid

I would disagree, that's an important question that decides this whole war. If there's no chance of Ukraine pushing back Russia and regaining those lost territories, what are they fighting for anyway? Wouldn't peace be preferable to a constant unwinnable war?

I think it clear that Ukraine thinks it has a good chance of going back to pre 2014 borders. That a huge problem for any peace deal.

Sad as it is, Ukrainians do seem to believe that, despite everyone else seeing how utterly unrealistic that goal is. Even US officials acknowledge behind closed doors that Ukraine isn't going back to pre-2014 borders. Of course it doesn't stop the US from pissing in Zelya's ears the next minute, telling him how he's moments away from victory, and how he should sacrifice every last Ukrainian for it.

The arguing in this thread reminds me of WWI, where both sides' high command were convinced that one more major push would collapse the enemy and end the war, years before it actually did, and sent an entire generation of young men to charge into No Man's Land to get mowed down by artillery and machine guns without a care in the world.

And in the end, instead of the war ending because of a grand offensive from the minds of geniuses, it only ended because one side ran out of blood before the other did, despite the fact the victors suffered millions more deaths and maimed than the losers.
