Also on the Lakota/Pine Ridge in particular: two of the five poorest communities within the United States are located on Pine Ridge (#1 - Allen; #4 - Wounded Knee). It's a travesty. Lowest life expectancy in the US, poorest county in the US, lowest per capita income in the US (about $8800/year); median household income around $27k. 89% unemployment; almost 60% in Federally defined poverty (some say if based on info beyond US Census data, it could be upwards of 80%). The worst in SD for basically every measure of quality of life. About 18k people, of which about 17k are Native. And over 40% are under 20 years old (median age is in the mid-20s), so no doubt also a disproportionately large percentage not old enough to care for themselves. High school dropout rate around 70%; teen suicide rates about 150% of US typical. There's actual tuberculosis; diabetes and infant mortality rates at depressing multiples vs the rest of America. And of course, alcoholism is a known menace (per their own site, estimated 85% households "affected by" alcoholism). It's also enormous - over 2 million acres and in fucking South Dakota so people are spread out/hard to reach on a vast and harsh range of land.**@NoReturn
That's a great question. As far as I know, they've never given a good reason for it. Kinda suspicious, especially with how they insist on personally collecting the goods/money which they then pinky-promise will be delivered to the Pine Ridge Reservation. It's always smelled like a scam to me, because even if they do make deliveries, there's no way of knowing if the Tranchers are skimming off the top. All of this could be easily avoided if they would just advertise a GoFundMe/Paypal/shipping address/etc that's controlled directly by the Reservation instead, but they "strangely" don't want to do that...
However, there IS something we do know: Penny has an Oglala Lakota friend named Katrina Mora. She lives in Longmont, Colorado (Penny's hometown) rather than the Pine Ridge Reservation though.
That's my theory, anyway. While the Tranchers did make a trip down to South Dakota to dump a bunch of junk (including their worthless alpaca fiber) off at the reservation, it seems like most or all of the money raised went to Penny's friend instead. I think the Tranchers started crowdfunding for the Oglala Lakota because the Tranch's own grifts had been drying up, so they wanted to see if they could find some new suckers willing to donate to some Native Americans instead. The goal was probably to get good publicity, and it's also possible that they had an arrangement with Katrina Mora to split the money.
- When the Tranch was running the GoFundMe for the Oglala Lakota last winter, they said they were going to hand-deliver envelopes of cash to Oglala Lakota families in need. Penny name-dropped the Pine Ridge Reservation, but he also included the line "and to folks who no longer live on the res". When it came time for the Tranchers to deliver, they posted pictures & videos of themselves visiting an (at the time) anonymous Native family [1] [2] [3]. As far as we know, this was the only family the Tranchers ever delivered to, and it was weird because they looked like a middle-class family who weren't even living on the reservation.
- This past summer, the Tranch made a GoFundMe to support an Indigenous business run by an "Indigenous elder" named Katrina Mora, who had a striking resemblance to the woman they delivered envelopes of cash to previously. Katrina Mora was doxed, and yes, she turned out to be a personal friend of Penny's and was not at all an impoverished Native living on a reservation. The Tranchers never disclosed any of this. It seems like they just fraudulently used the Pine Ridge Reservation name to raise money for one of Penny's friends. And who knows, perhaps the Tranchers got a cut of the money for their trouble?
If you haven't seen it yet, I wrote up a summary of Tranch news the other day: here. Exciting times to be a Tranch-enthusiast.![]()
TL; DR: coats for kids and the grandparents raising them are probably pretty acute needs for this rez in particular, and so there is some plausible rationale for giving to them even over local tribes.*
* I have only started reading this thread today so am not versed in what the nature of the so-called "mutual aid" actually is, and from what I can tell in my perusal here, this dumb ranch has one of the worst and most peculiar combinations of particularly toxic masculinity-gone-wrong (in every sense of all those words) I've ever seen, so don't mistake my fax for ackshuallies, just bringing some Cliff Clavenesque data points on the "why Lakota/Pine Ridge" question. I'm more than skeptical of the motives and intentions (and effectiveness even if they were well-intentioned) of these trancheros.
