I could rant for several paragraphs about how guntal and salad are abusing these animals, but I’m busy at the moment so I’ll leave it to the other animal nerds.
To put her hamster care (or lack thereof) into perspective, I keep feeder cockroaches and they have:
a) a larger enclosure (keep in mind that these roaches are less than an inch long as adults)
b) a healthier and more species-appropriate diet (I literally wouldn’t feed those shitty pellets and bits of corn to my roaches)
c) more hiding places
d) more substrate to burrow in (like, 5 times as deep)
e) and more enrichment
than these poor hamsters.
Hamster nerd here. Colour me MATI.
She will turn this around the same way she has with the cats. "Oh I clean them out every day guys!" she will hurple her way through excuses. Hamsters are notoriously iffy to keep in groups. Dwarfs can be kept together under the correct conditions but even with the correct conditions, some dwarf hamsters will still rip each other to shreds. These guys will begin spatting once they begin to reach maturity, they aren't dwarfs. Syrians are nasty to one another. They should be kept alone unless being introduced explicitly for breeding during a brief window of time.
It isn't pretty when it happens. It's horrific when a hamster eats its young and they will do some horrible damage to each other too.
1) The wheel is too small. That sized wheel causes hamsters to have spinal issues. A hamster should be flat when running in the bottom of its wheel, flatter disc like wheels are a good choice.
2) The bars on those cage will very quickly become the bane of their lives. Those hamsters will chew away at the metal bars due to lack of enrichment.
3) The cage they are in is considered a transport cage only in terms of size. Hamster enthusiasts will keep them in big plastic tubs or vivariums/aquariums for good reason.
4) The water bottle will saturate the bedding and quickly cause moldy conditions, hamsters with no enrichment become obsessed with bars and bottles and can rip out teeth.
5) The female hamster will likely not give birth and will reabsorb the babies due to stress, if she does give birth she will instantly eat them.
6) That wheel is going to be chewed to death.
7) I hope you both get bitten repeatedly
8 ) Hamsters need a rotation of enrichment and environment to be happy. You can't just put in one object and call it done.
9) The bowl they are keeping food in looks to be plastic, that is an excellent way for your animals to get bacterial infections if not cleaned frequently.
