Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

When I read the synopsis for Call of the Night I thought it was gonna be shit but it was surprisingly good especially as it got more serious towards the end. The soundtracks are all bangers as well, one of the very few animes I bother watching the intro/outro too
And this faggot being a trap caught me completely off guard. I thought I was good at telling but this one came out of left field

I have seen a couple of animes over the years but haven't really got into anime. Is there a good starter anime or is there an official Kiwifarms anime watch list?
It's a medium and not a genre so nobody can recommend you shit without knowing what you like. But the answer is Gurren Lagann.

Have they ever thought of making a series like that? Boyband members in military service ala Stripes?
I dunno if you've noticed but when it comes to semi-realistic age-appropriate settings they're kind of obsessed with the harmonious slice-of-life memory-making positive role model gimmick, and Japan's kind of allergic to thinking too hard about military stuff. Some kind of super friendly police academy boy band is maybe the best you can hope for.
Which is cool, I like that movie more than Stripes anyway.

Maybe there could be a koreanimation version except they'd need a Japanese one to rip off first lol

So I hunkered down and watched Bocchi over the course of a week or so because people here and elsewhere kept spamming her show.
And you know what? It was actually really good. Thanks for that everyone. Here's a funny crossover with CSM as a show of gratitutde

I'll probably get around to watching CSM in 2025

If you've seen a few then I'd recommend looking at what else the people behind it have made.
Since a good chunk of anime are adaptions of manga, there's a good chance that the original author has one or two of there other works adapted. If they where mostly original series then look at what else the director has made.

other general advice would just type in [anime series name] OP into youtube since 90% of the time you'll get a good idea of what the tone of the show is and if its interesting to you just from that 90 second intro.

Only use anime sites like MAL or AniDB for there database and advanced search feature, iirc both have features where for instance you can search for things not set in high school, so while you might get some shows about teenagers, the odds go down drastically.

If you have a hobby/activity there's a 50/50 chance there's an anime about it (odds go up if its something tangential to Japan) although Its also a 50/50 chance you'll either like it or completely despise it

its OK to listen to normies online now and then about what was the most popular show of the season is if you just want to put something on, just expected it to be overhyped to hell and back and never try to get into discussions with them

Other then that maybe try some anime movies not made by ghibli, mainly because ghibli is in its own little bubble for better or worse and arguably hasn't fit with most anime since the 60s-70s. And because most anime movies are still 2 hours or less ( I think all of satoshi kons moves where all just 90 mins) so if you watched a bad one you just wasted 2 hours instead of wasting anywhere from 4 to 12+ hours on a show you hated

Look who else is coming

Wonder how social media specifically US will react to Ryuunosuke

Well there's GATE, Japan Summons and Bocchi Jieikan no Isekai Funsenki

I dunno what that is but I'm guessing by the fucking angel and water-walking dog who I assume can talk that it isn't the down-to-earth morality genre stuff I was referring to.
I almost said "unless it's total sci-fi/fantasy/isekai or whatever" but decided being specific in the other direction was enough.
Obviously there are army men in things sometimes

I'd say the shitstorm is going to be minor at best mainly due to this show not being nearly as accessible to normalfags as other seasonal anime because its on HIDIVE. The VA for Ryuunosuke is okay, its going to be a hard act to follow because the original was Luffy's VA but im sure they'll do a decent job. I have no clue about Ten or her dad, I need to hear them in an episode.

Does that mean we're getting OP2 Thursday? I liked the original OP and ED.

I don't want to start shit or anything, but I recently watched Bocchi the Rock after hearing good things about it. (Haven't watched anime in a long time, besides keeping up with Gintama to see it through).

It was really sweet and I quite liked it, but I was really disappointed how weighed down it got by the classic lame anime tropes, the episode where she met the alcoholic lady was very sweet it even managed to defrost my cold heart when she was busking and later on the where they are performing at the bar and she overcomes her timidness to make up for what her bandmates are struggling in midperformance, both great scenes, but then a few episodes later it was back to fucking gay ass maid cafes at the school fair.

I will still say that overall I really enjoyed it, but I feel like it could have been so special if they kept it away from that crap I have seen in 10000s of anime before. Granted this was a little out of my zone, even when younger I avoided high school settings like the plague because of this, I'm glad I gave it a chance.

Yeah that part felt definitely weaker. Episode 11 in general felt a bit off compared to the rest.

On the other hand I really liked the way they handled episode 12. You'd expect some big climax but instead they had a fairly eventful first half that ended with expected subversion and funny bitter sweetness. The crowd diving was both awesome and cringe, which really fits Bocchi. And the second half was a mix of recollection and going forward, in line with the episode title ("morning light falls on you") on top of the Asian Kung-Fu Generation reference.
In summary it's slightly eventful but also a bit quiet, as opposed to episode 8 more conventional climax with more focus put on Bocchi rocking the scene, the titledrop and ED change. And this can throw people off but I think it also conveys some more contemplative and intimate feelings because of that.

Not sure if I'd put Mob or Bocchi for AOTY though. It's funny because Mob S3 was paced the opposite way from Bocchi: slower start (that made some people complain because MUH SOL SEASON, MUH FILLER) but ended on a bang.

Just finished reading All you need is kill, it was very enjoyable, maybe I should have read the novel first, but I just found the manga first.
I would like to read more stuff that is short like this, any recommendations?

I have a habit of importing mangas (sometimes artbooks & novels) directly from Japan, through Amazon JP, but DHL has increased the shipping prices by quite a lot since December 26th. To give an example, I could order 10 mangas + 2 artbooks for a total of 27 euros in shipping fees in the beginning of December, now it's a whopping 44 euros for just 10 mangas.

Unfortunately anime is like that where you just see the same old tired thing again and again. It's like everyone has to follow the same lesson plan. Sure not every show does that, but it's still something that was being parodied 20 years ago by Azumanga Daioh and yet you still see it today. How many series today still do the same maid cafe/haunted house school festival thing? They're far too tied to the typical otaku plots and cliches. That's why I appreciate series like Azumanga Daioh and School Rumble so much.

Fucking Gate, I have rewatched Gate at least 7 times. Not because I think Gate is a masterpiece that that is worth watching many times over but because I find it so forgettable that I have legitimately rewatched it many times over because I thought I never saw it. It’s not that I think it’s bad even I like Gate but about halfway through I either am told by my friends that I am watching gate for x time or remember that I’ve seen it and still not remember the second half. Anyone else have something like Gate is to me, when will I finally be able to remember gate on sight, is gate even real.
