I get that, although nowadays, I'm not sure if the right is wanting to have someone who plays center field because they feel the only way to fight the unhinged left is a right winger who has the same "give no quarter" attitude. They're already calling DeSantis an establishment plant. Maybe Trump and this new right were made for each other.

Its difficult to know how many conservatives are pro-trump, pro-desantis, or just pro-republican and will vote for whoever gets the primary. considering how trump's handpicked candidates in several states faceplanted hard during the midterms, i do think there is a strong case to be made that trump's base, though pious, may be in decline in terms of numbers.
Not that Desantis is by any real metric softer than trump, Just more sane and collected from what i've gathered. which seems to be enough to be called a "plant" by some. But to conservatives who were thrown under the bus or called RINOs, switching to a more typical candidate might be the future play.

I think its especially clear in the rhetoric by a lot of conservative talking heads that there might be an ousting of trump in the near future. whether its Ben Shapiro, Mike Pompeo or even Pence. Trump lacks friends, moreso now than ever.
