I don't know much about what is and isn't accepted in Islam but I'm assuming it's less accepting and tolerant of members whose positions are outside the faith's teachings than what you'll ever see in Catholicism. So, I disagree with your comparison, especially when a majority of US Catholics see themselves as pro-choice and, beyond a few fringe diocese (more in terms of high-profiled politicians like the President), it's not proven a deal-breaker to receive communion - at least from the perspective of the current Vatican, who warned against denying communion (even though they still look at abortion as a sin). I think the biggest difference is that Catholicism isn't as fundamentalist in how it treats those who may take up support for a specific cause that the Church may not support. In terms of abortion, you can be excommunicated for procuring one - but there is nothing about just believing a woman has the right to choose - whether that or accepting her right to sin or whatever. Of course, Catholicism also may have one of the more liberal interpretations of absolving one of sin so...

I'm guessing it's much more different in Islam and far more fundamentalist. Especially in that part of the world.

But even that becomes muddled since, unlike Catholicism, Islam doesn't have just one true leader.

Regardless, those who say there are moderate, pro-gay mosques are technically right, but it's all cope. While many Catholic-majority countries have relatively liberal laws on abortion (Ireland having liberalized just this century), you don't see that in Muslim countries with gay rights. Homosexuality isn't just a sin in Kuwait, it's illegal and punishable up to six years in jail.

Not very tolerant and accepting, whether Chantal thinks she can toe the line or westerners believe that progressive Islamic groups mean that she can openly support gay rights.

Maybe peetz, ZM and others idiot misunderstand the point of view of Islam on gays, because there is a subtle nuance, and nuance is not something that they are used to.
As far as I know, Islam don't condamn a gay for being gay, but for "practicing gay"
Being born gay is commonly seen as a will of God, a test of faith, a challenge to overcome sent by God.
Gays are suppose to accept it as an ordeal and fight to not give in to temptation.
But every bit of compassion, sympathy or pity is out of the window at the second a gay stop fighting against it, and don't be mistaken, Muslims, even born and raised in the Western world, absolutely can not be LGBT friendly.

And the peetz and ZM of the world seems to forget (or even not knowing about, after all, why research anything before open your mouth about it) the notion of Taqiya or Taqiyya or Takia, a concept that (with the right interpretation) allow Muslims to say what need to be said in order to "fit in" to serve other purposes/plans/agendas.
