Physical art doesn't necessarily require expensive gear but it sure does help, plus things like gallery quality canvases are pretty expensive, especially if you want a larger size. I have single paintbrushes that cost $50+ and my brush collection, which I keep in a regular sized drinking glass, is worth at least $500.

But, good luck replacing painters with AI. So you can generate an image? Neat, now code the software that translates that into brush strokes and controls a precision robotic arm that can use 50+ different paintbrushes and color match paint and you can begin to think about competing with a human artist, and that's just the bare minimum to even try. And that's just one medium. Graphic design is probably dead but people want physical art created by human hands and they want unique, original pieces created by human hands. Even hand-signed limited run prints of an original painting sell for pennies on the dollar compared to the original.

I actually think abstract art will be the last to fall because I do both abstract and landscapes and landscapes have a sort of "right way" to do it whereas abstracts are just like, go off so anything an AI creates will be derivative of other abstract paintings included in its training data and one will never be able to truly have its own style whereas an actual abstract artist might be inspired by like withdrawal-induced hallucinations or doing a fuckton of acid and just going to town on a canvas or something else you need a human brain to experience.

They could just partner the AI program with one of those chinese oil painting production lines. It wont be terribly unique, but they have gotten producing oil painting reproductions of whatever you want, including photos, down to a science - in only the way capitalism can, without any soul.
