Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

I just finished that Bocchi animu the internet's been hyping about for the last few months now.

As I understand it, there's usually a "3 episode rule" when it comes to anime that if it doesn't grab you in 3 episodes, you should drop it. For me, Bocchi failed the rule, and I was unsure about continuing it, but I went ahead and decided to keep watching from there, and I feel like the show finally found its stride by the fourth episode as everything from that point on had me coming back to it.

I will also say that the internet's penchant for making anything into coomerbait is impressively strong and social media gives the worst possible impression about what the show's really about.

Overall, it was a nice show. I think it's way too overhyped for what it is, and I certainly wouldn't call it one of the greatest anime of all time, but it was certainly enjoyable.

Do people overhype Bocchi just because they relate way too strongly with the main character's social anxiety autism? Because, I mean, I get the feeling too, but I'm not gonna put the show up on a pedestal just because I feel it's an accurately comedic interpretation of what extremist social anxiety looks like in a person. The visual gags used to highlight the extent of the anxiety are fantastic, but I'm not so sure they carry the show all by themselves, even if the variety in animation style is impressive.

Damn, I know the fall season is notoriously shit but it's especially bad this year. I'm thinking of trying to watch Monster since it's on Netflix in my country. I remember a lot of people talking about how good it was, but it pretty much vanished from anime circles. So anyone here watched it and can say if it's good?

Show is funny.
Girls are entertaining.
Music is good.
Art is vibrant.
Simple as.

I'll be honest. I never gave a shit about Evangelion and at this point I'll never watch it because I feel like I basically know the story.

Even if you know the story, I'd say Evangelion is still worth watching. It aesthetically looks great and is well directed in terms of scene framing and pacing. The End of Evangelion movie also looks great and is pretty bombastic.

When I was a kid I thought it was drastically inferior to DBZ and never really watched it but I finally gave it a chance probably 8 years ago at this point and it really worked for me then. DBZ still has a special place in my heart but YYH is definitely the superior series.
Mostly because Togashi actually puts in some intelligence in his writing. I'm not even kidding. Read the manga and compare it to DBZ. It's not all about "pOwER lEvelS" and shit.

It begins.

I watched it a few years back and it's definitely pretty good, great OST and had my interest throughout. It does have a filler episode now and then but overall it's well done, been meaning to give the manga a go myself. Surprised more people don't mention it either, as you said it was considered an all time great but now people barely discuss it.

I love the OP:

Isekai Ojisan has got to have one of the most cursed productions I've seen for an anime in a while. Halfway the series gets delayed for a whole season due to COVID and the director quitting, Netflix stopped subbing the fucking series, and now Episode 13 is in limbo for God knows how long. It's a shame because the anime is funny as shit, it's just constantly getting fucked over.
Same with Golden Kamuy S4. It's supposed to be the final season of the show, but it's on hiatus after the 6th episode, the next 6 episodes will release god knows when.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the biggest knock against the Monster anime is its pacing, I really think it could of been fit into 64 episodes or even 52 rather then its 72 episodes, but I still think its good.

Although I've noticed a few more people watching it, and hatting it recently because they can't get over two plot points that happen in the first 3 episodes.
The first is Tenma's decision to save Johan over the Mayor which I've seen people argue its stupid and the way the series ends is pointless, which I think are some of the most brain dead arguments about the series
Second is How exactly Johan killed the doctors with the candy. I'll admit this is somewhat valid at first, but there's a later scene most people overlook about how candy wrappers was found at one of the victims home where he died. So best guess is the candy the 3 are shown eating aren't the ones that killed them

And there's one more thing I've seen recently. Monster is in no way a supernatural series, but a few people have taken issue because of that.
There are several moments when Johan appears to a supernatural monster if you will, and many people falsely assume Urasawa is building up to a supernatural climax because of that, but in the end unlike Billy Bat and 20th Century Boys, there where none and most of Johans supernatural feats where either characters jumping to conclusions or the show throwing in some misdirection to only imply it.

The best way to describe it is if you ever watched a true crime documentary/biopic and noticed how most of them like to play up the killer as being more/less then human, Monster kind of does the exact same thing just for a fictional mass murder in Germany during the late 90s.

I remember back in 2006 HBO said they were interested in making a live action Monster miniseries. At the same time Warner claimed to want to make live action adaptions of Bleach and Full Metal Panic, not Alchemist sorry, and said they wanted Zac Efron as the lead.

That was less HBO wanting it more Del Torro trying to get them to greenlit it as a passion project which ended up falling through.
Probably was for the best even if he was the one showrunning things, though tbh I might of actually preferred Monster receiving the live action series if it meant 20thCB was the one that got an anime adaption since I think the later is of better suited as an anime instead of the former.

The animation was creative and the funny memes did the show's marketing for it. That being said I remember seeing someone recommend Do It Yourself a bit earlier in this thread. I checked it out and two episodes in it does CGDCT overall better than Bocchi for me. Much cozier atmosphere. Both seem worth continuing.

I'd say DIY is more iyashikai, bocchi is MOESHIT CGDCT too but with more focus on comedy and bocchi's daily trials and tribulations due to her anxiety. also good music.

Thankfully someone is fucking based on this forum.

Kiwi outshines every other single character in that show, besides Falco. I want to become Falco in the future.

In case people somehow haven’t seen it yet
I like that they let him live to the end, I like him. He is a very human character but still manages to fit into the NC setting. Unfortunate that we only got texts and not a phone call for the edgerunners sidequest in game but that would be too good. Ride on space cowboy

But both were okay, not more...
2021 was so much stronger with Super cub...

Some news, apparently Kodansha has stopped simlupublishing their manga. Average redditor Chibi be like PeOpLE aRe gOnNA PiRaTE. Bitch. We already are. Probably why they stopped, the numbers sucked

I don't think there really is a way to destroy anime's piracy culture. Its just expected and normal. There is no competent central body that can do something like with what Valve did with gaming's culture.
I think most people would move from pirating anime to paying for it if there was a genuine benefit for doing so. The only issue is that these companies are incompetent as shit and that there will never be something that paying for anime will ever have over just pirating it. If you want to support creators, there are a million and one ways to do it that don't require you to pay for a CR sub. If you want to watch anime, there are a million and one ways to do so. The only people who willingly pay for CR or any other anime service are people who want to "support the industry" but are too lazy to find any other alternative or people who are just genuinely dumb.

Piracy is also just engrained into western anime culture. If it weren't for dedicated fansubbers and whatnot, anime wouldn't become nearly as popular. It's kind of hard to separate the two.
