Evidently the SFWA was once a “trade organization” that shifted to a 501(c)(3) at some point in the recent past. A trade organization exists to exclusively serve the needs of its members where a charity can’t “discriminate” [within, as is stated, the science fiction genre or authors of works that are sci-fi “adjacent”].
