We had the good fortune of connecting with Dylan Mulvaney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dylan, what do you attribute your success to?
I think the biggest factor behind my success is being 100% authentic. As a content creator on social media, I want to make sure that I am being as true to myself as possible. It can be scary to put yourself out there, especially on the internet, but I took the risk and people have enjoyed my authentic self and chosen to follow along! I think if you find what your niche is, and stick with it, people will come. I had to try a lot of different things before I found the parts of myself that people enjoyed the most, and have built on those things to produce more content
We live in a time where it is fairly easy to create and broadcast yourself, so don’t be afraid to get messy and just do it! Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a broadway actor, but most recently, I’ve built a following on Tik Tok. When the virus shut theatre down, I needed a place to put my creative ideas, and making videos was therapeutic for me. I discovered my niche, which was interacting with animals, and people loved it. I also get to sprinkle in parts of myself such as LGBTQ+ topics and musical theatre appreciation. It’s so much fun. I’ve learned that for every win you have, you’ll have a hundred losses. You can’t let that make you jaded and negative towards the world or the industry. Every time something doesn’t go my way, instead of cursing my luck, I find ways that it made stronger and I move on to the next goal. For anyone hoping to get into the entertainment industry, I would recommend being as kind to yourself and as authentic as possible. The times I have succeeded were because I was unapologetically myself and people could tell. And I’ve lost when I pretended to be something that I wasn’t. Be you!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
San Diego! My favorite city on earth. I would start with breakfast at Snooze in hillcrest, followed by a morning in Balboa park. Pick a museum or the zoo and make a day of it. Then make it to La Jolla cove for the afternoon and do a little shopping and beach relax. Follow that by some dinner in Little Italy at Davanti, and then follow with a Show at the Old Globe or some drinks at Polite Provisions!!!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a shout-out to a role model of mine, Sean Hayes. Although I don’t know him personally, he has paved the way for LGBTQ people in the entertainment industry immensely. He acts, produces, hosts, and is a person with immense talents. I want to wear a ton of different hats like him one day! He also is not afraid to be feminine and I love him for that. He’s one of the only people I’ve seen on tv that felt like a reflection of myself. I hope to tell him that one day!
