1. He just got fired after losing a big case(he claims some chick messed up)
2. He just failed to go independent in his home town
3. He was getting creditors calling.

It was a perfect shitstorm of life ruination primarily caused by his own actions.

Being a relative newbie in internet lore, I spent the last few days going over Dick Masterson's thread and the parallels are extensive. Nick hasn't had his cuties moment, but I'm expecting it soon. He does have one thing going in his favor though. Locals, while a pit of degenerative parasocial idiots, allows him to voice his hypocritical copes outside the public eye (whereas Dick did it on Twitter).

As far as Nick's old audience, there are definitely members in locals who have been there for a while. I've also been going through some of his old streams and Andrew_Wahoo (grumpy dwarf pictured previously) was in chat.

I'm predicting that Nick's gonna say some gay shit about lolis. He's dipped his toe into gay anime territory when the weebs joined his chat during the Vic Mignona stuff so it wouldn't surprise if his degenerate shit and anime shit collide and he says something ill-advised about lolis. Briefly: Pat has an 18 year old girlfriend. Defendant calls him Pat The Paedophile online. Pat loses his job as a cop so sues defendent for calling him Pat the Paedo. Court enters judgement as a matter of law because calling someone a paedo is defamatory per se. and jury awards general damages and special damages. Special damages is overturned on appeal, the rest stands.

This bit in particular stood out to me:

I'd definitely be settling if it was me.

That is one case in one jurisdiction, but its not what I would consider a settled issue nationally. The way I would describe the current state of things is that in some jurisdictions, there are legal tests applied to establish if calling someone a pedo is or is not per se defamation. Its become a contextual question of how the statement is made.

The best thing I can do is point you to another decision from another state to see the logic of how they decided a very different result from the minnesota case.

The problem with the tests proposed in most courts is that they are very subjective and they allow the legal system quite a bit of flexibility to decide subjectively if calling someone a pedo is per se defamation or not. It allows the judge to use their spider-sense to determine what the intent of the person was. That is how the law officially works in the light of day.

Practically speaking behind the scenes, it seems to often come down informally (not as a matter of official law) to:

a) How much damage was done to the person by the accusation
b) Was the person making the accusation going to be accepted as credible in saying what they said.

If I know you, say you are a pedo and you lose your job or suffer business losses, that can end up being per se.

If I'm someone who really doesn't know you, is generally regarded as a loudmouth idiot and someone nobody in the general public takes serious and you don't really suffer from the accusation....not per se.

There might be other lawsuits that haven't come to light, but my best guess is he already wanted to leave the US and didn't care about coming back, so the bankruptcy was the final nail in the coffin. If you're going to run off and start a new life somewhere else, why bother paying off a debt that you'll never have to worry about?

A long time ago I knew a guy who did something similar but with college, he owed a bunch of money but dropped out before graduation, and just never paid it back because there wasn't much they could do to him as he didn't plan to buy a house any time soon or to go back to college ever.
