Ask any vatnik and they would tell you how Russia is the strongest out there, how everyone fears and envies it. Putin's posturing and threats with nuclear weapons is capitalizing on this very perception, that's how they want to be seen - a superpower, NATO's peer (lol).
I assume you're talking about US boomers, referring to the Cold War attitudes and the like. You might not realize it, but you just described most Russians over 40 years of age.
Russian propaganda worked ceaselessly for about a decade to put these attitudes into overdrive. Everyone around is the enemy, only dear leader can save you etc - the usual bullshit.

Ukrainian telegram channels report that the chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valery Zaluzhny, is asking Zelensky to start withdrawing troops from Seversk, which has lost its supply routes and will become the next target of the Russian army.

"The commander-in-chief, Zaluzhny, considers it pointless to hold the city, which currently does not play a role in strategic terms, and its retention will cost a lot of forces for the Armed Forces of Ukraine."
We may soon hear reports of an operational encirclement of Seversk.

Peskov says that Putin isn't going to declare mobilization or change of the "SMO" status tomorrow.
Keyword being tomorrow. He said there wouldn't be mobilization few days prior to it being declared, so take it with a truckful of salt.
It's going to depend on how quickly they burn through existing conscripts. It is a matter of time, unless war somehow ends (it won't be through the victory on a battlefield).
