President Joe Biden on Tuesday said that the United States will impose sanctions “far beyond” the ones that the United States imposed in 2014 following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula.

“This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine,” Biden said in a White House speech, signaling a shift in his administration’s position. “We will continue to escalate sanctions if Russia escalates,” he added.

Russian elites and their family members will also soon face sanctions, Biden said, adding that “Russia will pay an even steeper price” if Moscow decides to push forward into Ukraine. Two Russian banks and Russian sovereign debt will also be sanctioned, he said.

Also in his speech, Biden said he would send more U.S. troops to the Baltic states as a defensive measure to strengthen NATO’s position in the area.

Russia shares a border with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

A day earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered troops to go into the separatist Donetsk and Lugansk regions in eastern Ukraine after a lengthy speech in which he recognized the two regions’ independence.

Western powers decried the move and began to slap sanctions on certain Russian individuals, while Germany announced it would halt plans to go ahead with the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

At home, Biden is facing bipartisan pressure to take more extensive actions against Russia following Putin’s decision. However, a recent poll showed that a majority of Americans believe that sending troops to Ukraine is a “bad idea,” and a slim minority believes it’s a good one.

All 27 European Union countries unanimously agreed on an initial list of sanctions targeting Russian authorities, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, and EU foreign affairs head Josep Borell claimed the package “will hurt Russia … a lot.”

Earlier Tuesday, Borell asserted that Russian troops have already entered the Donbas region, which comprises Donetsk and Lugansk, which are under the control of pro-Russia groups since 2014.

And on Tuesday, the Russian Parliament approved a Putin-back plan to use military force outside of Russia’s borders as Putin further said that Russia confirmed it would recognize the expanded borders of Lugansk and Donetsk.

“We recognized the states,” the Russian president said. “That means we recognized all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.”

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Putin said that Ukraine is “not interested in peaceful solutions” and that “every day, they are amassing troops in the Donbas.”

Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning again downplayed the prospect of a Russian invasion and proclaimed: “There will be no war.”

“There will not be an all-out war against Ukraine, and there will not be a broad escalation from Russia. If there is, then we will put Ukraine on a war footing,” he said in a televised address.

The White House began to signal that they would shift their own position on whether it’s the start of an invasion.

“We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia’s latest invasion into Ukraine,” said Jon Finer, the White House deputy national security adviser in public remarks. “An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway.”

For weeks, Western governments have been claiming Moscow would invade its neighbor after Russia gathered some 150,000 troops along the countries’ borders. They alleged that the Kremlin would attempt to come up with a pretext to attack, while some officials on Monday said Putin’s speech recognizing the two regions was just that.

But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters Tuesday that Russia’s “latest invasion” of Ukraine is threatening stability in the region, but he asserted that Putin can “still avoid a full blown, tragic war of choice.”

A wagner commander is seeking asylum in Norway.
He claim that he has seen deserters being shot by Wanger internal service.
With Wanger being a mercnary group, I would not be suprised that unless he has some really good shit, he will get charged with warcrimes (which he claims to have also witness)

also, the serial killer Michael Popkov (who killed over 80 people and is suspected of having killed over 300) is requsting to join Wagner.
If this keep on going, Wanger will turn into a modern Dirlewanger Brigade.
You might be interested in reading this, try machine translation and if you have any questions feel free to ask, I'll help.

Might translate later if I have time, since it's a pretty juicy post featuring information from an insider in Russian MoD nicknamed WingsOfChange who I brought up before, who was a reliable source in the past. There's always a chance it might be bullshit, but that's just how anonymous sources are (though to my knowledge they've sent these guys from Gulagu.net some documents in the past which speaks to their credibility).
It details conflict between Wagner, and specifically Prigozhin and MoD, who's actively attempting to humble the mofo. They're apparently having a petty fight over the credit for Soledar that Wagner claims as their own with Prigozhin using it to demonstrate how useless the army is and how good his guys are in contrast, for whatever reason. Dunno about you, but I think that picking a fight with the army is a fairly terrible idea.
Considering what Soledar is, Russia's losses in that area as they're desperately trying to get a W, it's incredibly pathetic.

As for the wagnerites seeking asylum, they should be milked for all the info they've got and locked up.

Lucy Arestovich resigned. Letting the truth slip out was too much to him to keep his position even though he's been a loyal agent for the last year. They are eating their own now...
Would be good to link an article in future

I guess he thought it would be badass rather than embarrassing to claim they'd shot down a Kh-22

We should probably just accept that both sides lie through their teeth 24/7 whenever it comes to numbers and important information.
You'd have to be stupid not to, in a war. You want the enemy confused, thinking you've lost everything just as you prepare a counteroffensive, and thinking you're very strong and could attack decisively any day when you're weak and barely holding positions.
I am surprised to see this naive, typically Western expectation at transparency and feasible data out of such an intense battlefield. You're not really getting it. The involved sides want to win this war and making shit up and creating disinfo and propaganda are an easy decision once you're used to blowing people to pieces.

> Russians estimate

Of course they do, it's right there with 100500 destroyed HIMARS and 4 Bradleys.
Source is as usual, "Trust me bro".
At that level of exaggeration they might as well claim 100,000 enemy KIA. 12K+ dead in a city that orginally had a population of 10~11,000 residents means that place should look like fan art from Doom or the opening scene of Terminator 2 when the hunter killer robots are crushing mountains of skulls with their tracks.

There's rumors circulating that it was supposedly Ukrainian AA that hit the residential building in Dnipro, they're of course unsubstantiated and stem from one man's mistake, as well as classic deflection by Russia who's been using this excuse all along.
Arestovych essentially said that Ukrainian AA successfully intercepted the rocket, because he likes talking up Ukrainian armed forces and works as a sort of hype man in this regard, or just mixed shit up and meant some other strike because there's been many, with the use of S-300 as well which they could in fact intercept.
But based on the footage available, there's no sound of explosion before the missile hit that would indicate AA reaching its target (let alone footage of AA working there), which is the claim Russians and their shills are making, since Arestovych is everything they have to support said claim.

Ukrainian Air Force gives a fairly specific account of yesterday's attack. 5 bombers Tu-23M3 launched 5 X-22 missiles from Kursk Oblast over the Azov Sea. One of them, launched approximately 15:30 (their timezone I assume) hit the residential building. They claim to have detected with a radar approximate launch position, its speed and height of its flight path, and that they have no doubt that it's X-22. Adding that they have no countermeasures for it. "Since the start of Russia's aggression against Ukraine, they have launched over 210 such missiles, we weren't able to intercept a single one".
Of course it would help to dispel doubt if they find fragments or post radar data if possible.
Stands to reason they'd be deniying it if it was their fault too, but there's no concrete confirmation for that either.

This whole thing reminds me of the trolley problem. Would seem obvious you'd try to intercept a missile coming your way, and sometimes collateral damage might be unavoidable. You might've saved barracks with 300 soldiers inside or power station that provides thousands of people with necessary electricity, but at the cost of fewer lives. It sucks.

Of course I wish all the AIDS and cancer on pilots of these bombers and their families.

Goddamn reporters, man:
Can't imagine the sort of luck it takes to survive 9 stories collapsing on your head, at least proportional to the misfortune of having one of 5 missiles fall on your house specifically, I would assume.
Did you just justify the destruction of an apartment building because ‘Ukraine had to man!!!!’

Fuck all the way off

You are quite literally retarded if that's what you took away from what I wrote.
1) Russia did it; 2) Dude made a mistake and besides that there's no evidence to suggest that Ukraine's AA is to blame.

Weird how when Russia launches missile attacks on Ukraine, stuff in Ukraine blows up. Must be Ukrainians doing it.
We should probably just accept that both sides lie through their teeth 24/7 whenever it comes to numbers and important information.

Naturally, but people should balance out the bullshit a bit. It's fair to assume that Ukraine suffered substantial losses, but I do not believe for a second that they exceed Russia's (as one would expect, because there's a reason attacking forces require superior numbers to dislodge enemy from the fortified position - considering that currently their technological level is about on par, Russia has no means to skew the ratio in their favor), which is what's omitted here. Yet ziggers are quick to throw around the numbers that Russia's MoD who was caught blatantly lying so many times claims.
At most losses are close to equal, in which case Russia has nothing to celebrate, because that's pathetic.

I know you're joking but,

At this point Reddit will tell you "ThE rUssIaNs BoMbEd aN ApArTmEnT!!!"
/chug/ probably has some fanfiction involving a NATO/Azov false flag.

The simple answer is that inertial navigation messed up, as it does from time to time. And was bound to happen sooner or later because dozens of these things have been fired. Maybe there was an electrical transformer 50 meters away or something.

With regards to the shooting down, Ukraine has stated that they have no way to actually intercept a Kh-22, and they're more or less hoping for Russia to run out of the things. (Note: There was one instance where someone apparently found the wreck of a Kh-22 that was shot down)

The Kh-22 is a million-dollar missile that flies up to 25km in the air, descending at Mach 4.6. Anything above Mach 5 is considered to be hypersonic. It was originally developed to drop 1 Megaton nuclear warheads on American carrier battle groups. I'm no missile expert, but I very much believe the claim that Ukraine couldn't intercept one if they tried.
(A Russian page talking about it)
Ukraine has openly been mobilized since February

Fairly old news, but H10 Poseidon VTOL drones are active in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian military received H10 Poseidon Mk II unmanned complexes from the benefactors. Three complexes, which include nine drones, were transferred by the former president Petro Poroshenko. Volunteers from the NGO “SPRAVA HROMAD” converted DAF Leyland trucks into control vehicles.

"Now we have a control vehicle, all-wheel drive and diesel, comfortable chairs for work, Starlink for data transfer, an autonomous cabin heater, generators and charging stations,” volunteer Yurii Biryukov explained the details of the transfer. Poseidon drones operators training takes place in a classified modern training center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

  • H10 Poseidon VTOL UAS is a midrange electric UAS that provides portability and covert operations capabilities. H10 can be transported in an SUV or a pickup truck and prepared for operations in less than 10 minutes.
  • H10 Poseidon VTOL UAS is designed as a monocoque high-wing airframe with electric motor and pusher cruise propeller, and four permanently mounted VTOL electric motors and propellers. This design has a significant advantage in flight safety, as VTOL propulsion is used not only for takeoff, landing, and hover, but also for in-flight emergency recovery in place of an emergency parachute.
  • H10 Poseidon is designed to operate in GNSS-denied environments, has a very low acoustic signature in cruise flight, an extremely small radar cross-section, and no detectable thermal signature, which makes it a perfect tool for covert operations.

Russia should halt its efforts to recruit Serbs to fight alongside its Wagner paramilitary group in Ukraine, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said.

Vucic criticised Russia's websites and social media groups for publishing advertisements in the Serbian language in which the Wagner group calls volunteers to join its ranks.

“Why do you, from Wagner, call anyone from Serbia when you know that it is against our regulations?” Vucic said late on Monday in a broadcast by the Belgrade-based Happy TV.

Serb volunteers took part in the fighting alongside pro-Russian forces in Ukraine in 2014 and 2015. No one has a clear idea of exact numbers at any one time but dozens of Serbs have signed up to fight in Ukraine since 2014, observers say.

The Serbian legislature bans participation of its citizens in conflicts abroad and several people have been sentenced for doing so.

Vucic denied allegations that the Wagner group, led by Evgeny Prigozhin, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has a presence in Serbia where pro-Kremlin and ultranationalist organisations have supported the invasion of Ukraine.

On Tuesday, Russia's RIA news agency aired TV footage of two masked men identifying them as Serb volunteers at a weapons training course in Russian-controlled parts of the Zaporizhzhia region in Ukraine.

Serbia is a candidate to join the European Union, its main trade partner and investor, but it also maintains trade and military cooperation with Russia, a traditional Slavic and Orthodox Christian ally.

Serbian Defence Minister Milos Vucevic also warned Serbs against joining Russian ranks in the war against Ukraine.

"This will result in legal consequences once they are able to be held responsible before the state bodies,” Vucevic told Radio Free Europe.

Although it repeatedly condemned Russia's invasion against Ukraine at the United Nations and several other international forums, Belgrade has also refused to impose sanctions against Moscow.

Serbia is entirely dependent on gas imports from Russia and its NIS oil retailer is owned by Russia's Gazprom.

This is bigger than it would appear, because this means that AWACS will have direct access to the conflict area of the Black Sea. This will make any fleet ops very difficult for Russia since they'll be directly observed. It also means comms intercepts from Southern Russia will be cleaner.

"Men are being recruited in the country at war" is as newsworthy as "sun has risen this morning".
But now that I think about it, it might be useful for Ukrainians here, if there's any (though I'm sure they've known before any of us).
I see no reason for someone to participate in the war against their will, even when there's a reasonable expectation they would since their home is being invaded. It's their life, after all, and we only get one. So I hope everyone who doesn't feel like it's their duty manages to avoid it.

Men are being drafted in a smaller country that has been invaded by a larger one. This is like posting North Vietnamese draft notices as some variety of own.

Russian observation bunker hit by rocket, w/ two different drone POVs & incoming round. Not unusual in Ukraine, but still not something we see everyday.

Artillery has become a true one-shot kill weapon system, which is fairly terrifying. It's always had the theoretical capability, but I never expected drones to make it happen.

  • Dutch to follow US and Germany with decision to send Patriots
  • Air defense system has key role to fight Russian invasion
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the Netherlands plans to send a Patriot system to Ukraine, joining the US and Germany in bolstering the Ukrainian military arsenal with crucial air defense to fight Russia’s invasion.

The Netherlands has “the intention” to follow the US and Germany in sending the missile defense system, Rutte said in joint remarks with US President Joe Biden in Washington. “I think that it’s important we join that and I discussed it also this morning with Olaf Scholz of Germany,” he said.

The US and Germany in recent weeks each pledged to send the Patriots, which are highly prized because they can shoot down missiles but also have high-tech sensors that help in identifying what’s in the air. The Kremlin in response said it would target the Patriot air-defense system that the US has pledged.
Ukraine’s partners are under pressure to deliver more air defense systems after a Russian missile hit an apartment block in the eastern city of Dnipro on Saturday, killing at least 45 people, including six children. Russia has been targeting critical infrastructure since mid-September, leaving millions of citizens without electricity, water and heating amid freezing temperatures.

Ukraine was unable to shoot down the Russian missile which hit the Dnipro apartment block because it does not have the necessary equipment, according to Ukrainian air defense forces. Patriots would have been able to, they added.

It could still take several months before the Patriots are actually deployed in Ukraine, especially in light of the need to train Ukrainian forces to operate them. The US will start training in the missile system for Ukrainian soldiers at Fort Sill, Oklahoma this week.

Top defense officials from the US, UK, Germany and other allies will meet in Ramstein, Germany on Friday to discuss weapons deliveries to Ukraine. Germany is expected to announce a decision on whether to send Ukraine advanced battle tanks ahead of the meeting.

The Dutch military started operating the Patriot system, which stands for “phased array tracking radar to intercept on target,” in 1987. The surface-to-air guided missile systems can neutralize fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and ballistic and cruise missiles up to an altitude of 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) and a range of 60 kilometers.

Dutch air defense personnel work closely with their German counterparts in operating the Patriot systems. In Europe, only Germany, Spain and the Netherlands operate the Patriots.

The Dutch Patriots were previously deployed during the Gulf Wars and in southern Turkey to protect the country against ballistic missiles from Syria. Last year, the Netherlands and Germany jointly deployed Patriots to Slovakia at the request of NATO to protect the eastern flank of the military alliance against incoming missiles.

TL;DR A 3rd Patriot battery has been pledged from the Netherlands. This will lead to quite a formidable setup along with the other secondary systems already in contry such as the NASAMS which can be networked along the Patriot and older legacy systems like the HAWK for better coordination.

And now for something completely different, one my favorite types of news: reporting on battlefield competitions. Team Hilux decides to up their technical game in the ongoing race with the Rocket Raptor & Gradzilla.
In Sumy Oblast, the border was reinforced with mobile S-5 anti-missile launchers. One converted SUV is capable of launching 32 S-5 missiles. UB-16-57 unified launch blocks are used for this.

My guess would be they are trying to count every member of a unit that got rotated out/relieved. Being extremely generous, it would be just anyone AFU soldier an reporting an injury regardless of if it even temporarily took them out of action, turn Casualty = Dead. Even then, unless we are looping in other fronts or going back in time, that seems a nearly improbably high number.

Just for contrast, the reported results from Tet for both US/ARVN:
9,078 killed
35,212 wounded

(edit; I'd toss in NVA/VC numbers but the number would be way too high. Sources were either US/RVN which'd be inflated or PRV which counted all causualities of 1968, which would have been understated but probably greater than just Tet.)
