Another possible theory is that at least some of those gender-benders were always narcissistic and histrionic. The difference being is that cross dressing, being a girly man or an overly masculine woman, was unusual back then and edgy enough to get the wanted attention, so they didn't go further.
However, gender-bending is no longer edgy or unusual, so they have to go the extra step by sexually identifying as a hermaphrodite or eunuch, and throwing a bitch fit over anyone who does not play along.
Remember, queer theory is about pushing boundaries for the sake of pushing boundaries, without regard to the fact that such boundaries and rules exist for a damned good reason.

Erwin Gohrbandt, the man who operated on Lili Elbe, became a Nazi 10+ years later and did hypothermia experiments on prisoners. Hypothermia experiments were just putting people in ice water for hours, somehow considered more "cruel" than genital mutilation as "SRS pioneering".

Hey now, Erwin Gohrbandt only did the orchiectemy. Most of the surgeries were carried out by Kurt Warnekros who joined the Nazi Party probably only out of convenience and not out of true belief in their principles.
Fortunately, they removed that part from his Wikipedia page. (to be fair, that part was sourced and directly ripped off from some tranny's blog which has its own citations, but they're in German)
Pretty sure she's an actual woman. I think she was in the middle of saying "cis" when the based cat attacked her.
I was sure that it was fake. All the other real suicide by gunshot videos I've seen have been very understated. They were all pistols and you usually wouldn't see more than a trickle of blood.
