I can't find the author for this. It's basically the golden rule, but more eloquent.
People see me as a bit of an asshole but I play devil's advocate a lot because I believe everyone needs the benefit of a doubt.

Reminds me of a passage from Herodotus which may be the first recorded justification for the "Devil's advocate" and freedom of speech in general:
