There is this strange delusion among many HOI4 modders that they absolutely can't depict those they consider to be historical 'bad guys' in a positive light, or even at all in some cases, because to do so might actually convince impressionable players that maybe fascism or Nazism whatever is a good idea, nor can they stand the idea of letting the chuds derive any enjoyment (however unintentional) from playing 'their guys'.
I just wish Hearts of Iron modding didn't get infected with this mindset by the widespread popularity of TNO. The rumblings were always there, but it really came out in full force after that shitstain of a mod, and now almost nothing good has come out of the scene in years. If you want to write more complex character stories into your HOI4 mod to make the buttons you're pressing mean more, by all means go ahead, that's not an inherently terrible idea. The problem, is that almost all mod devs aren't very good writers, and beyond that they're usually Autistic Ideologues who use ideology as a means of parsing complex ideas and people in a way that is simple and palatable to them.
I don't use Autistic as a throwaway term, if you look at the way these people act, write, and think, it kind of becomes obvious that they just do not have the ability to understand the world beyond what they're favorite politics daddy says, or parse people either. No one is written as a character or a person in mods like these, they're written either as an ideal ubermensch of their chosen brain poison, or as parody meant to whip you into a frenzy of hatred.
People aren't ideal ubermensch though, they're people. They've got foibles and quirks and idiosyncrasies that make them interesting. Simo Hayha wasn't a hate filled bile spitting antisemite, despite having fought in the SS. He did it to fight the Russians after his country had signed a peace agreement, and the SS would let him in. MacArthur wasn't just a bull charging football coach esque general who would have fallen in with the "racist establishment" like a lot of mods like to portray him as. As someone else earlier in the thread said, he was against segregation in his army because it reduced unit cohesion and morale, I doubt he would fight for or with anyone who was early KKK tier racist, despite what mod authors like to think. It's telling that these people only really understand political archetypes.
I guess what i'm getting at is that Hoi4 modding was doomed to autistic ideological purity spiraling from both left and right, as extremists of both varieties are generally horrible people who have no principles to derive political opinion from, and so must pick an ideology to give them a framework to understand the world and people. When an entire community becomes infested with ideologues, eventually normal people can't make a difference anymore.
