Knitting is something my people have done for a very long time.( It’s now recreational rather than survival but there are many fascinating pictures of women carrying half their body weight in peats back from the field in a basket strapped to them while knitting at the same time. Knitting belts helped women knit constantly - while working. )
It used to be very uncool then a few Hollywood celebs picked it up and suddenly it was all over. I dont really use ravelry any more. I nab traditional patterns off the Russian search engines, ravelry or my stash of Latvian pattern books. Not many SJWs have the patience to knit with 1.25mm needles so this little corner is still full of old ladies who are polite, encouraging and enjoy just looking at pics of each others work. Ditto the fair isle stuff - it takes patience and skill and the troons haven’t got here yet. Pattern designers get constantly slagged for not using black models which is hilarious when you see they live in some tiny island with twenty people on. And of course the accusations of cultural appropriation- anyone can knit your ancestral patterns which have deep meaning but God Forbid you knit a Greenlandic inspired yoke or they’ll crucify you.
The yarn price stuff is weird too. I’m a bit autistic and don’t like the feel of acrylic, or mohair, or a few other things both cheap and pricey so I stick to the rough shetland stuff/Norwegian yarns - the kind of thing that comes in a million colours and wears like iron. I’ve had SJWs stiff at that as they peddle fifty quid a skein (wind it into a fucking ball if it costs fifty fucking quid) organic vegan yarn. Ffs knit with whatever you like the feel of and can afford.

Piggybacking off of this, the general toy community doesn't seem too, too bad outside of people forming cliques around who can afford what and who collects what. But the recent Monster High reboot really ruffled my feathers when they decided to make Frankie Stein trans. I really couldn't give less of a shit if some kids in middle school identify as nonbinary during their 8th grade syndrome phase, but I really hate that it's adults pushing it onto them. Naturally too, despite going for an androgyny thing with her, she still wears all the same kinds of girly clothes she used to. My aunt is part of knitting church group which is just a bunch of boomers, they got exposed to troons thanks to Ravelry.
