Professor argues math education is White and cisheteropatriarchal space, 'limits' queer and students of color​

A Vanderbilt professor delivered a lecture earlier this month at a major mathematician meeting that described college math education as "white" and "cisheteropatriarchal."

Luis Leyva, assistant professor of mathematics at Vanderbilt University, delivered a lecture titled, "Undergraduate Mathematics Education as a White, Cisheteropatriarchal Space and Opportunities for Structural Disruption to Advance Queer of Color Justice," according to the website of Joint Mathematics Meeting.

The lecture consisted of two parts. The first half of the lecture showed findings from Leyva’s research about the "educational experiences of 39 undergraduate queer and trans students of color pursuing STEM majors across historically White and minority-serving universities in the United States."

Leyva’s lecture abstract states the "findings depict how Black, Latin*, and Asian QT (Queer-Transgender) students’ narratives of experience reflect forms of intersectionality, or instances of oppression and resistance at intersecting systems of white supremacy and cisheteropatriarchy."

"STEM Education as a White, Cisheteropatriarchal Space" (Leyva et al., 2022, American Educational Research Journal), to capture how intersectional oppression among QT students of color unfolds across three interconnected levels of influence in undergraduate STEM: ideological, institutional, and relational. In addition, I highlight findings that illustrate structural disruptions, defined as educational structures and practices that resist intersectional oppression in undergraduate STEM," Leyva said.

The second part of that lecture included "coping strategies among QT students of color navigating white cisheteropatriarchy in STEM for protecting their academic success and intersectional identities."

"I apply my framework and research findings to argue how undergraduate mathematics education operates as a white, cisheteropatriarchal space that limits learning opportunities affirming of queer of color identities and experiences. I conclude by re-imagining undergraduate mathematics education with structural disruptions that advance justice for learners marginalized across intersections of race, gender, and sexuality," Leyva said.

Leyva’s delivered the lecture at the "largest mathematics gathering in the world" on Jan. 4th in Boston at the Joint Mathematics Meetings 2023. According to Vanderbilt University Peabody College's website, Leyva is an assistant professor of Mathematics Education, a Department of Teaching and Learning faculty affiliate, and works for the Department of Gender & Sexuality Studies.

He works on research that "explores narratives of oppression and agency across historically marginalized groups’ educational experiences to uncover interlocking functions of racism and cisheteropatriarchy in undergraduate STEM."
Fox News Digital reached out to Vanderbilt University and Leyva for comment but did not immediately get a response.
 
Math is for whites, which is why Asians and Indians disproportionately outperform everyone in it.
Asians and jews are schroedingers whites, and Indians are technically Asian. (Literally Asian, but they're usually considered distinct enough to label by nationality instead of by continent).

It might be more accurate to say Chinks are "good" at math. But also they're the ones who say that without cheating there is no fairness, and math is like the easiest class to cheat at. (Sure, math can get complex, but it's an objective subject that even computers can do. Poetry may be a bs unit, but they can't competently cheat at that without risking someone noticing they're all submitting the same poem).

How good at math are they, really?

This is without considering that there's two levels of math within every level:

1. Can do the math
2. Understands why #1 works

I've had "science teachers" and "statistics teachers" hand me surveys to fill out that very clearly demonstrated that they were not qualified to actually do their job. Sure, they can tell people mechanically what to do on paper, but they don't understand why the numbers work the way they do.

Which level of mastery do people tend to reach?

39 undergraduates across various institutions? With a sample size that small I think its entirely possible that absolutely no valid conclusions that have any applicability outside of those few dozen students could be made. I know of studies of genetic disorders that are so rare they don't even have an established name and they had more cases to work with than he had in his sample size. This entire study just needs to be shit canned.

The one regarding math isn't a published article, it was just a lecture, and no notes were provided, so we can only guess at the retardation in it.
This Leyva guy wrote an entire paper to just say that he thinks that niggers, the alphabet people and especially nigger faggots can't do math.

So, basically what this guy is saying is that shitskins, faggots, and trannies are too stupid to do math and it needs to be dumbed down for them to get passing grades. That's what I got from it. And somehow this isn't an offensive thing to say. So, if these groups are too fucking stupid to pass math, then how do they expect to work in STEM fields that often rely upon very complex math? How is it good for society or "racial justice" or whatever to just wave these people along despite not knowing what they're doing, just to put them in fields they are guaranteed to fail at? What happens when buildings start collapsing or jet engines start exploding in midair because one of these idiots fucked up the math?

That's the reason the proggies hate math and hard science so very much. It doesn't conform to their worldview that everything should bend to sense of reality, it just won't listen to them when they say 2+2=3.

Now to be the devils advocate...I did read this fucktard's presentation and he's not really calling for a change in math itself. He's saying that the way math is currently taught puts "non normative" types at a disadvantage when it comes to learning and opportunities to advance in the field. Which is...something I guess. I dunno how someone who truly believes that reality is malleable to their own worldview could ever really learn and master any real science. Science that relies in imperial standards and faultless logic (especially in math) to be correct.

I mean it's possible that some demi-queer-trans-owlkin out there is a prodigy math genius that's been overlooked because he/she/they/it dresses like a 3 year old and promotes NAMBLA values but the chances are pretty damn slim. Plus math don't give a shit about your queerness, if you come up with some new fangled math that provides real applicable solutions then it will get published. I'd reckon it would get "extra" published just because your some special snowflake math genius given the current ideology that permeates upper education.

The truth is probably more along the lines that minds who fall for the progressive trap are more then likely incapable of functioning in a pure science environment when logic and reproducibility rules supreme as the two concepts of what I think reality "should be" and what it actually is are 100% mutually exclusive.

Actually, looking through the paper, there's nothing in there about doing math at all. It's all about Black queer students wanting their innumerable boutique identities to be the center of attention at all times, and complaining when that's not the case. The paper could just as easily have been written about history, English, philosophy, or any other academic discipline. I suspect "STEM" was just chosen because it's an attention-grabber when you say "math hates blacks".

largely tied to what they did to math in public ed outloud where they make students have to write out parts that most people above room temperature IQ can do instantly in their head intuitively. They're just saying the quiet part out loud that its because certain races are disproportionately unable to do that instinctual part

2+2=4 doesn't care about fantasy gender or your feelings.
A few years ago there was a flap on twitter or other social media saying this was false because they saw “2” as a concept, not a number, and since 2.5+2.3=4.8 which would be rounded up to 5, therefore 2+2=5 is true. And got angry if you pointed out 2=/=2.5.
