After I've given it some thought and looked back over what we've been shown, Peach being the way she is makes sense given where the story is going.

Think about it: Peach is the sole ruler of the mushroom kingdom and has to look after all of these seemingly harmless toad creatures. There's word of this Bowser guy going around and ransacking kingdoms to get his hands on these powerful macguffins (power stars) in order to accomplish god-knows-what.

With that in mind, why wouldn't she take this situation seriously and choose not be the ditzy lovable pretty princess we're used to?

She took it seriously before too, but didn't cause me to cringe whilst doing so. Even those obscure old comics still played it up for laughs to a degree, like "haha woah the princess is fighting, that's funny, who'd expect that". It had a lighter tone and wasn't obviously a feminist inspired decision.

Also, maybe it'd be one thing if she started off ditzy and lovable, but was forced to adapt, but you know damn well that won't be the case. She's just a bossgirl from beginning to end.

I know there's not a lot of depth to Mario characters, but completely changing their core personality traits means these characters are literally not the ones we like.

But again, it could be worse.

Isn’t this like every Mario game though? Bowser has been way worse in games, and there has also been way worse threats, but the characters always remain the same. I think the halberd scene really throws people off, me included. Her using one is fine, but I want a small scene of struggle for it, then maybe a return to her usual self. A good example to explain would be Mario + Rabbids. Peach is capable and using a fire arm in that game, yet still feels like Peach in every cutscene. Just look at how they introduce her in the trailer:
Somehow a Ubishit product managed to do what this movie is trying to and made it feel like Mario through and through. They really should have taken her characterization from this game.

To your point though, it is only a trailer, so more of her usual personality may come through later.

Sure, but that's Video Game Peach. We're talking about Movie Peach, a completely different take on the character.

Ugh I know that trailers can be misleading, but this looks exactly like the Lego movie, right? Everyone else around mario is competent and capable, and the titular hero is a cowardly, inept clutz.

I actually miss Bob Hoskins and Jon Leguizamo from the shitty 90s film. At least they were somewhat confident.

Blech gotta subvert male heroes right?

Plus, they despised even being in it. Dennis Hopper (who played Koopa in the movie) even claimed that he only appeared on set for 17 days as oppose to the other actors and the crew who still appeared on set for the majority, even despite hating on the husband-and-wife duo team director that sabotaged the movie's script.

Seth Rogen as DK is something I'd expected. The same exact obnoxious voice he uses in every goddamn film he's in. Other than that, I'm liking this and I'm still surprised that this is from Illumination of all studios, and they're responsible for generic family feature stuff.

Originally I thought he would be a good fit for Donkey Kong if he used his stoner voice from Knocked Up or 40 Year Old Virgin and D.K. was just a chill laid back ape snacking on his bananas. Instead hes just angry, serious, unfunny current year Seth Rogan and just a bad fit for the character.

This film's voice acting choices are either really good or really terrible. You have Jack Black, Charlie Day, and Kevin Michael Richardson, whose voices fit their characters or make an effort to sound like their characters versus Chris Pratt and now Seth Rogan who do not fit their characters and make little effort to change their voices.

Mario should be inept because the Super Mario experience for everyone is Mario dying and being hurt. It's a goofy fat Italian who gets crushed by giant levitating stones and falls into lava. This aspect just lends itself to slapstick humor.

The message of the movie should just be "You can still be the winner no matter how many failures you have." I don't even care that Peach is not going to be damsel in distress, just as long as it isn't her going "OH YOU MEN ARE SO PATHETIC." With that said I didn't mind when Nintendo actually did that moment in Super Mario Odyssey. This was a showing of a "strong woman" done right. FYI the whole inspiration for Mario is Popeye and the only reason we wound up with Donkey Kong was because Nintendo couldn't secure the rights to the Popeye at the time. I could see Olive Oyl doing the same thing to Popeye and Bluto.
Super Mario Bros perfectly translated the spirit of Popeye to Mario, the hero is tasked with a incredulous situation, eats his magical healthy food powerup and saves the day. I'm guessing the movie will be mediocre, looks like they're shoehorning way too much stuff in a 90 minute cartoon, characters are way too chatty for their own good. I'm just gonna be a boomer and watch Fleischer Cartoons lamenting how they don't make em like they used to.
