Was I not baptized into his death? Even so, should I not be raised up with Christ as a new man?Asking Jesus to switch places between you and Jacob won't bring you back Esau.
Is the demon in the room with us right now? When you are inhabited by a demon, it is able to potentially trick you into going to Hell with it when you die. Being inhabited by many demons, or one demon that has a lot of influence over you due to you giving in to it frequently, means that they can drag you there. Many people are inhabited by demons without knowing it. The name of Christ can drive them away even after death, though, but the sort of people who are the most likely to end up in this situation are the least likely to think of doing this, or even realize what is going on until it is too late; if you don't believe in an afterlife, you won't realize that you are in it for a while. You'll just think you are having some weird hallucination or something.
Horrible theologyPeople go to hell because they choose to do so. Not indirectly, either—over a lifetime of interior acts of good or evil, a disposition is cultivated of either selflessness or wickedness, and this is how a person orders himself to reason and act when he is put on the spot and has no time to think about it. This is the interior forum of secret thoughts, the place from which come all good or evil acts a person rationally executes. Nobody expects death, and in a way you might say that it is the ultimate form of being put on the spot: in that split second moment, your inclination, the one you harbored all your life whether you showed it outwardly or not—that predisposition decides your fate.
There is also the matter of personal judgment at the moment of death. No matter how good a lawyer you think you are, when your acts are all tallied infallibly before you, you may be so humiliated by your inadequacy that you choose hell yourself out of nothing but grief and shame.
