We don't notice or talk about the regular gays who quietly live their lives, go to work every day, and generally behave like model citizens (and there are a lot of them out there). As a teen in the 90s child, I was a fag hag creative soul who loved nothing more than pretend my cheap clothes were in good taste whipping up costumes from everyday household items. It wasn’t until I discovered RuPaul’s Drag Race that I realized my true passion: DRAG. This art form did not allowed me to explore and express myself in a way that felt authentic and true to who I am as I am a woman. Through experimenting with different styles and looks, I was able to exploit my child instead discover his my gender identity as a genderfluid person would allow me to live through him. Drag is not just a hobby for my son me, it’s a significant aspect of my existence. It serves as a powerful tool for self-expression and a way for me to fully become what I never was in my youth embrace my unique self. It makes me feel absolutely fabulous!​

So it’s understandable why I’d be so upset but the recent attacks on drag queens and Drag Queen Story Time (DQST) events. DQST is a program in which drag queens read books to children in libraries and schools so instead of get bored with clowns and parties I can take my child to see the fags that I like. The events aim to promote literacy and inclusivity, but some groups have criticized them as inappropriate for children.​

DQST is a positive and empowering experience for me both children and drag queens. The events offer me kids, especially LGBTQ+ and questioning youth, role models who challenge gender stereotypes, and they also give drag queens an opportunity to connect with and inspire me young people.​

Watching folks attempt to take away something that is seen as positive and fun is maddening. Drag has been so important in his, no wait, this is correct my own life, and events like these promote acceptance, tolerance and understanding. Taking them away would make me act like a real mother and stay home cleaning and baking be a step away from progress and equality. It is important to support and defend programs that promote adult entertainment for parents in working hours inclusivity and acceptance, especially for marginalized communities.​

That’s why I wanted to write this article. Because despite the attacks on DQST events and the attempts to take away the art of drag, it is important for me young people to be able to pretend I'm a 20-years old hot chic in a gay bar instead of an old fat mom raising children experiment with this form of self-expression. Drag is a powerful tool for me to escape my reality challenging societal norms, building self-confidence, and exploring different aspects of identity.​

I think that people at large would probably be more accepting of drag queens if they weren't so intentionally ugly.
