I'm done with Chantal, I'll miss everyone's commentary from this thread because you guys are funny as fuck, but I can't deal with the cats.
I've probably sperged about this before, and I am prepared for the neg ratings. I used to work for the shelter system those cats will end up in if she does surrender them. It's horrific. Even in shelters in Ontario with the kindest workers possible, the animals die afraid, often in pain, confused and alone. Unfortunately, that is the reality of cats in Ontario. We have way too many as well as extremely lax protection laws, since the farm act covers cats and dogs rather than having their own protections under the law like in the US.
The Canadian shelter system is a kind of hell that I don't think most people can imagine because it is rarely discussed. So I will talk about it here, it enrages me that Chantal is trying to sell that she has the cats' best interests and this will be good for them.
Best case scenario they end up in an OSPCA affiliate. Their lives will be even worse if they end up in a local animal control, those places are concrete nightmares, the ones where I live still sell their cats to the research facility at Queens University, I really hope that isn't where BBJ and Sam end up. This is what will happen to those cats in an OSPCA shelter, Sam and BBJ will be separated, he's probably adoptable, he's fluffy and mostly white, and people like that. BBJ is 100% unadoptable. Her best case scenario is they euthanize her as soon as Chantal hurples her useless ass out of the door. Otherwise, she spends the rest of her days, probably a week, in a small cage surrounded by other terrified, crying animals.
Euthanasia for cats in animal shelters is *not* in any way comparable to having your own cat euthanized at a vet. Cats are not given any numbing agent or anesthetic, and shelters couldn't afford that even if they wanted. More progressive shelters euthanize each cat individually with a long needle plunged into its heart. Lucky cats die quickly, but it is still painful, and they always scream. However, it was not uncommon for the shelter worker, who by the way, has had no college or university training for this; we had an 18 year old do this job where I worked, to mess up and for the cat to be in agony while they died slowly.
Other shelters euthanize cats overnight with gas. Some places prefer this obviously because they don't have to watch the animal die. Usually, they clean up the mess in the morning. The animals shit, piss, vomit, and clearly try to escape their crate with this method. Some of them aren't quite dead the next day and have to go for another round the next night.
I wanted to write more but I can't. I haven't worked on euthanasia in a while, but it's still so upsetting. I tried to save as many as I could, but it was never enough, and the fact this useless trash can throw her animals into this grinder and not give one shit is too much; I can still remember cats I killed years ago, and she's going to forget Sam and BBJ the second she is out the door.
